Need some advice. Have a Samsung LCD now. Has great picture but the sound is pathetic. I need a 2.1 arrangement as I can't integrate the hifi with the TV in this room.

MUST have decent sound and be able to punch when the movie demands it.

Am clueless in these matters and could really use some pointers. Thanks.

Mutant Enemy

what sort of thing are you looking for and what sort of budget do you have ? Bose do some excellent little systems. however if you have more of a budget some slim line B&W speakers combined with a supernait using the supernait's dac for the blu ray player could yield some interesting results.

only a couple of thoughts however it's a rather open ended question.

If you are looking for something small and inexpensive you could look into the Focal XS 2.1 system.
I have one in the bedroom hooked up to an lcd screen and it also sounds decent for music when hooked up to my mac.

I have a JVC NX-F3 which has reasonable sound and punch for the price.
Looking now to replace with a NaimUniti, pair of n-sats and an n-sub, connecting bluray & v+ box via optical.

I have the same TV + the same problem.

I'm really a two-channel guy, and since I'm not too fussed about surround sound etc, all I wanted that was a small, elegant solution with minimal wires that would let me a) follow dialogue clearly and b) have some semblance of bass.

Given my aesthetic issues and relatively low quality requirements, I think I'm just going to get a soundbar. I've had a few (though by no means comprehensive) in-store demos, and the only one I thought that did a decent job without an additional sub was a model by Denon -- costs the equivalent of US$600 here in India.

It's just a speaker array in one box that you can plonk in front of your TV... no DVD player, mandatory sub, etc.

About to pull the trigger on this one shortly as soon as I get back from holiday (on my way to a town near Perth for a quick diving trip -- it's whale shark season!)

I don't fancy the soundbar idea, never heard one that sounded any good IMO.

Think I'll just acquire a decent little 2 channel amp (Rotel?) with a remote and a pair of small speakers (maybe Kan size or similar) and run with that...

Or I could just ditch the LCD and buy a Plasma. My brother has a Panasonic plasma which sounds excellent unaided.

Audio engine A2s. They're powered and should play load enough but may need a powered woofer. A5s are larger with more bass but offer no benefit other than bottom at the expense of some snap. Tiny, cheap and better than you may think as long as the pre out of the TV is variable. Check the EQ settings when trying a speaker. My brother thought some outboards weren't very good until I showed him the EQ was preset for the internals. Roll Eyes
