UnitiQute 2 versus Nait 5i plus DAC for streaming from iMac

Esther ·
Hi, this is my first post but I have been a Naim user for 11 years and currently own a CD5, a Nait 5i and a pair of 25 year old B&W DM220i speakers. I have a very large cd collection and after recently moving house and as yet to unpack the Naim system I have found that I am currently listening to my music by streaming iTunes and Spotify from my iMac via an Apple TV to a temporary set up in my lounge (Cambridge Audio amplifier and small bookshelf speakers next to the TV). I am...

What speakers are you using with your Naim Nait 5i?

Benoit Theriault ·
I'm looking for a "Made in England" speakers with a large frequency response, deep and hight, natural sounding and dimensional sound very detailed. Is the Naim Intro (I) is a good choice? What do you suggest?

Re: Another 4 ohm speaker question indie

Hi Loudmouth Volts = Amps x Resistance Power = Volts x Amps Basically what this means is that your amps will have to produce double the power when the impedance of the speakers is half 8 ohms. So hopefully your amp will have a stiff robust power supply that will enable the amp to double output power into each halving of the resistance. So if 50w into 8 ohms it is 100w into 4 ohms it is 200w into 2 ohms If the amp is not up to it with the power supply and or the output trannies cannot deliver...

Hey david, Ok, that was very informative and I think it is helping me understand this a little better. But I didn't get an answer as to whether or not a naim amp (5i, supernait, superuniti, or one of the NAP separates) would affect my speakers, in a negative way. The superuniti is the only one I have seen with a 4 ohm rating. Lsi9 specs: 4 ohms 20 to 200 watts per channel 88db efficiency rate 2.4k, 200Hz crossover frequency Overall frequency response 38Hz-27kHz The specs for the naim...

I've only had 4 ohm speakers for the past 25 years and have used them with all kinds of Naim amplification, including NAP140 chrome bumper, Naim UnitiQute, and now a NAP 250.2. The NaimUniti is 50 WPC at 8 ohms and 90 WPC at 4 ohms, and since it is based on the 5i amp section, you can expect the Nait 5i should work just fine with your 4 ohm speakers. At 88 db sensitivity, they are more efficient than the 85db 4ohm speakers I drove with the lower powered UnitiQute (30/45 WPC).

Re: Another 4 ohm speaker question indie

Richard Dane ·
Loudmouth, all Naim amps are rated into 4 ohms, indeed, the number after the NAP refers to the sum of both channel's power into 4 ohms. Hence a NAP250 is rated at 125 w/channel into a 4 ohm load. So long as your speakers have an unreactive load, i.e. they don't vary wildly in impedence across the frequency bandwidth, then a nominal 4 ohm rating should be fine with any Naim amp. However, if the impedence varies wildly and 4 ohms is the average, with dips down to 1 ohm or less at certain...

Simon-in-Suffolk ·
Hi Loudmouth, further to Richard's point, another consideration if your speakers go to a very low impedance at a particular frequency is that the resistance/impedance of the speaker cable comes more into play. Ie you should keep it as short as you can whilst observing Naim's amps minimum lengths for inductance purposes. Otherwise you might find certain types of transients are sapped away, as the energy has gone into heating your speaker cable rather than moving the air despite your amp...

I suggest you read Richard Dane's response. That explains it all nicely. I was until last week using Linn Kabers, which are 4 ohms, with a NAP180 and it was fine, so long as I did not push it too hard. Remember that more speakers are destroyed by underpowered than overpowered amplifiers.

Sadly, I moved on up the chain w/ a Naim XS and Flatcap combo that never matched my first experience with Naim and the simplicity of the single box design. I drove my Naim 5i-2 w/ B&W 805Ds and Harbeth P3ESRs with superb results. I now have an LFD Mk IV w/ a pair of Joseph Audio Pulsars... And looking for another Naim 5i-2 if one is available for another system. I never heard these speakers paired together... But I've never been...

So far I used B&W 685, but was not satisfied with treble, which only "woke up" when volume was at least at 11.00. 2 days ago I tested B&W CM1, Wharfedale Denton, Sonus Faber Liuto and JBL Studio 530. The best result I got with JBL, very good middle and high frequency, bass very tighth and well controlled. So I bought JBL and sold B&W 685. JBL finally produced very good if not excellent audiophille loudspeaker, very good match to Naim.

Ive seen two really good reviews of those JBLs, they sound the kind of interesting product a few people were bemoaning a lack of nowadays. Bookshelf size with horn units for the treble and a single bass unit. 'Very open and fast' sounding. In reality quite hard to hear in the UK, they seem direct sell only or are there any Naim/JBL dealers out there? Cheers John

Hi John Unfortunatelly I can't help you with advice on how to find JBL loudspeaker in order to audit it. Here I bought my Naim combo, now JBL speakers, some cables, etc. But I saw the JBL website so you can find there dealers for their speakers, might help. JBL studio is really, really good match for Naim, and the price is bargain,...

Frank had a good post about this: Naim/Kudos X2 go well together. Kudos has been totally kicking Neat's butt lately. Rega RS5s are leaner, also very good, if you want a sound that's lean. If you room is sparsely furnished, and 'bright' go with Harbeths. Totem Arros are another good choice.

I am sat here listening to the Lower Dens twin hand movement album. have had to check there isnt a bass guitarist or drummer in the room . Although cranking the volume up till the bass fills the room, gives decent body to the music (room = 24m2) without messing the music up.
