Unitylite and new iphone app

Vania ·
Hello! I am completely lost with the new app. How can I use it with my unitiLite?... There's no explanation anywhere and it's so counter-intuitive it seems only to work with the new mu-so system or a multi-room system which I don't have. Is there any...

Vania, There are several threads on this, and I think Naim is encouraging us to contact them directly, but I've had some grief as well, so I'll see if I can help. You will need the IP address of the Unitilyte. I get this by going to the web page that accesses my router. The router IP address should be on a sticker on the bottom of the router. There should be a page that shows what devices are accessing the router, and their IP addresses. I use an iMac running Mavericks, so I can can only...

This is how it should work -- automatically finding your Naim player. You should NOT need to manually enter IP addresses, etc. The app finds your Naim players on the network. If it can't, a restart of the app may be necessary. But with a normally operating home network, the app quickly finds your...

Bart, I agree; the app should find the Naim players on the network, but it did not in my case; I waited, I restarted things, I pulled plugs and restarted computers, UPnP servers, phones, reset apps, cleared caches, and on and on. Even after manually entering the IP address of my UQ1, which I had to do several times, I had no success. Eventually, it did connect, but less than a day later, the app froze up, and then, it lost all ability to find the UQ. So, whatever 'normal' is supposed to be,...

I'm really rather dim when it comes to computery - and a lot else besides - so I was a little worried with the new app. But when I opened it up, there was a picture of the SuperUniti which once pressed has worked without a hitch. Maybe I'm just lucky.

You have 2 choices to group it together: Add a compilation tag to all tracks in that one album with a value of 1 Set an Album Artist to: Howard Shore
Reply

Re: Annoying "album" presentation in App ...

ChrisH ·
Or the other option is to change the tagging of the album name to 'The Two Towers Soundtrack' and change the song title to 'Howard Shore - Track Name'. That way you end up with one album with multiple tracks presented in the app whilst still being able to see the artist. That irritated me with compilations too, MichaelSch, but by making the tagging adjustment above it works OK for me now. It won'tsolve the problem of long album or track titles not displaying in the app though unfortunately.

Re: Annoying "album" presentation in App ...

This is nothing to do with the app; it's the tagging of the files themselves. I have loads of compilations that I ripped from CD and all are fine. On the other hand I downloaded one album where each track had slightly different artists, and until I fixed the metadata it was showing as several albums.

Re: Annoying "album" presentation in App ...

ChrisH ·
I didnt find that any of the compilations I ripped to my US came out with tagging that was OK for me, HH. I seem to remember most of them came out as the same album OK, but as I wanted to see the artist as well as the track name, I manually retagged (via n-Serve App, nice and easy of course) with 'artist - track name' as I mentioned above. But as you say, the App simply presents the information that it is served with.

Re: Naim App Album Art Problem

Hi Simon -- welcome! The album art is governed by the particular server, not the Naim app. The Naim app only shows what the server sends to it. The server SHOULD be sending album art that shows up for the album itself and not just individual tracks, but it sounds like it's not. I'd go into the server settings and see if it is set up to look for art named folder.jpg That is a standard name, but it's worth checking. What server are you using?? Cheers, Bart

Guys Thank you all for your prompt support here - very much appreciated ! I seem to have got there in the end simply by rehosting my libary from the Mac to my new NAS (a WD myCloud) - this seems to have rectified the issue and I now get a full complement of album art where needed. Thanks specifically too to a couple of you for mentioning Plex - its brilliant ! It has solved another challenge I had streaming video to my TV. Now I can get on with enjoying my lovely UnitiLite !!! Roger, 1. You have 2 entirely separate playlist systems, one on your NAS, and one on the Naim app. Your Synology playlists can be viewed and played, and are accessed as a folder in the UPnP menu, but they can't be edited in the app. You can create playlists on the app too. Tap on the ... symbol next to a track or album and select 'add to playlist'. (Note that you can, in effect, import playlists by using this feature to add a NAS playlist to a Naim app playlist.) Naim app playlists are...

Philippe Ive been through much same process as you but without a NAS. I keep the iTunes library on a PC with a back up on a WD My Passport running all the time. Yes - I eventually also resorted to the same manual process as you to get artwork to show up on the Naim App. There is an thread somewhere on this forum that points to a "Doug Script" that can do the work for you if you have a Mac rather than PC (I couldn't find anything similar for PC) I run Minimserver on the PC and now transcode...

Not only in the formats but also in the same format depending on ripping software. Technically, WAV, FLAC, and ALAC should resolve to the same data. Assuming bits are bits, the difference heard is the noise generated by unpacking at the Uniti end. I definitely hear this on the NDX and Naim have confirmed their units are optimised for WAV. As a solution, many choose to use another piece of software to read the iTunes library and transcode to WAV so that whatever the file format, the Naim gets...

Thanks again for all the replies and apologies if I didn't give all the information I should have in the first place. I appreciate your patience. I've now deleted and reinstalled the app, but still no artwork. So I think I need to go back to basics here, if you can bear with me, and give a bit more detail. I'm not sure what you mean or what you are doing with " .... go to TS212, then music ....or.... go to TwonkyMedia, then music ..." etc. I open my iPad & touch the app & it opens & I select NAS (thats what Naim originally named UPnP) & I browse the NAS "Music" share according to how I've set the NAS to browse . So I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by "go to TS212 ....or.... go to TwonkyMedia" That aside, please check your app settings to be sure you have NOT...

Twonky Media Server is a piece of software which resides on your NAS. The two views you describe are: Bare NAS Twonky Media Simplifying grately: With option 1 your streamer will 'pull' the information from the NAS With option 2 Twonky Media will 'push' the data to your streamer.

Me neither My streamers show: * MusicNAS - not to be used * UnitiServe - this is the one to use I gues it's down to individual architectures of various manufacturers (mine is by QNAP).

Re: Naim app: album artwork gone missing

This is getting more and more complicated! It looks like people have different things showing according to their setup. As Adam says, these are the options I see under UPnP on the first screen. I'm using a QNAP NAS drive if that is relevant. Mike: Yes, UPnP compatibility mode is unticked. Adam: So are there any pros / cons using option 1 or 2 or doesn't it matter? Why do you say, in your case, UnitiServe is the one to use and not MusicNAS? Still no explanation as to why the artwork under...

I think I've just answered my own question. If I go down the TS212 route and start playing an album, it plays the first track and then stops. So back to TwonkyMedia with no artwork.....

As you have a QNAP I suggest you download Asset or Minimserver. Twonky is really a bit rubbish.

Re: Naim app: album artwork gone missing

Thanks, I'll investigate those. So you think it is Twonky which is at fault and not the Naim app? If I clear the image cache in the Naim app, artwork is gone for ever? Surely it isn't supposed to do that?

Re: Naim app: album artwork gone missing

Hungryhalibut ·
The Naim app only shows what the server sends it. If you clear the image cache, all the album covers reappear (or not, in your case) the next time you fire up the app. I use Minim, which is really good and I'd recommend it. I've seen Asset working, but have not used it myself.

I see from the thread that HH has already suggested an alternative media server soft. I also find Twonky a bit weak. To answer your question: my streaming network is asministered by a UnitiServe SSD with QNAP NAS used as an external network store /share. In total I run 4 NAIM streamers in different rooms. Each streamer is connected to a root directory of the UnitiServe SSD (option 2 in my example above). NAIM App on various iDevices is simply my remote control, where I choose a 'room' that I...

I think you may have to rescan your music store (NAS?) so if using a NAS, it will be done using that interface. Or if it's an HDX (or whatever) you'll have to use that app to rescan the music store on it.

Re: Naim app: album artwork gone missing

Hi I assume that all your artwork is inserted correctly into their appropriate folders. The actual image should be a JPG - only this will work. I would recommend rescanning your NAS.

Re: Naim app: album artwork gone missing

Nick Rich ·
Thanks for the replies. I've done 'rescan content directories' in Twonky Server on my NAS drive, but it's made no difference. There is also an option to 'rebuild database' but that tells me I will lose all customised metadata, so I only want to do that as a last resort. I have most artwork as Folder.jpg in the same folder as the flac files. I should add that I can still see all artwork in the Naim app on my iPad, but on the iPhone, nothing.

Have you tried deleting and re-installing the app on your phone? You would lose the playlist created in the app though I guess.

Re: Naim app: album artwork gone missing

Adam Zielinski ·
One last resort: delete the iPhone app and load it up again. I would not touch the server data anymore. If you get a chance, buy an external drive and copy all your server data to it. Keep it disconnected from the network - a simple but effective back up. This way should anything happen to either the NAS drive or your metadata you can always go back to an 'external' source.

If you had said " .... I can still see all artwork in the Naim app on my iPad, but on the iPhone, nothing " at the beginning, it would be straight into Ospreys suggestion to delete & re-install the iPhone app.

Do you back up your iOS device to a computer with iTunes? If so, you should be able to restore the app, with its settings and playlists, from the last iTunes backup, depending on how recent this is. Obviously it would be better if the app didn't break in the first place, but it might restore your lost playlists.

Having a file called folder.jpg in each album's folder on your NAS/PC/server does seem to be the safest (?) route. You can obviously do this manually, but something like Bliss can help do it automatically.
