which Dynaudio for naim nait 5si

hancoock2367 ·
Hello. I need an advice my hi fi system consists of: Naim Nait 5si , Marantz SA8005 Sub Rel T5 cable wireworld oasis rca solstice for speakers. I would change the speakers B&W 685s2 with the dynaudio because I read that sounds more hifi and an excellent coupled with naim. do you think the Dynaudio Excite x18 or x14 are a good match with naim nait 5si. Or else Dynaudio Emit M20? the music I listen to is mostly rock and country, my favorites are Dire Straits, Pink floyd, David Bowie, guns...

Sounds normal as there will alway be some crosstalk you can hear with such crazy volume.

Re: Is this normal on Supernait 2?

If I recall correctly, the crosstalk on inputs is due to a serial connection for the ground tap on all inputs on all integrateds and slimline preamp (higher end preamps have parallel circuits). So only the signal tap is switched, and only a fainth leakage well bellow human hearing treshold could go through during normal operation (and this means not putting the volume knob at zero attenuation). The humming comes from the capacitive filtering that is almost directly supplying power to the...

Humming (lauder than usaual) on empty inputs is actually normal. Just for fun switch every source off and leave SN2 on - you may hear a loud humming. Once you switch your Naim CD on it will be gone. By the way - why two CD players?

Re: Is this normal on Supernait 2?

You really should not be getting the humming. I suspect that it's an earth loop and that if you disconnect the Marantz and just leave the CD5si connected it will go away. If it is an earth loop, you need to sort it out. If you are playing a cd into the cd input and then switch to (say) the aux input and turn the volume right up, you will hear the cd very faintly. This, as others have said, is crosstalk, and it's perfectly normal. Listening at 3 o'clock, on the other hand, is not normal. I'm...

From my experience all NAIMs work better if a power supply: Has a dedicated earth Is a separate, dedicated audio circuit There are various thoughts on using RFI / surge protecrion strips for powering NAIM. It does degrade the sound quality a bit, but may be an inevitable choice for reducing mains hums. A second advantage is a surge protection - it's better to 'kill' a power strip than yoru beloved NAIM

The Focal Aria 936 speakers are rated up to 300 watts so well matched for a SN, unless of course the amp was clipping when the volume was at 75% , which is what I suspect was happening.

So to sum up: 1) Volume was at Thor's Hammer levels; 2) This isn't recommended, as 3) Crosstalk, hum, clipping, and tinnitus can result; 4) Hopefully, this system is sited in an aircraft hangar or the Doge's Palace; and 5) Note to self: when buying a s/h amp, remember to ask the seller if they crank the volume to 75%

The volume dial on my SN2 once got to between 1 and 2 o'clock, but only because the volume button on my universal remote got stuck. Once I had charged across the room and taken manual control of the situation, I expected to turn around and discover the next challenge would be removing the Mission 752 drive units now firmly embedded in the sofa. Actually, they didn't seem to care. They were 91Db sensitivity if I remember rightly, and I can confirm that things were getting pretty loud there...

Indeed - I thought I can handle loud music, after more than 20 years of playing in a band, standing next to a drummer every week. But 75% of a SuperNait2 ??? The acoustic pressure must have been enormous. Mine never goes above 10-11 o'clock. Usual playing volume is around 9.

Re: Is this normal on Supernait 2?

By 75% do you mean above 12 o'clock on the dial? You shouldn't exceed this on a Naim amp on a line input. What speakers are you running? Must be monstrously inefficient or you are incredibly hard of hearing.

My speakers are Focal Aria 936, the reason I found this was because I was just seeing how far it would had never gone that high before. And yes I meant passed 12 o'clock Andres

Re: Is this normal on Supernait 2?

That would have been loud! A slight hum is not uncommon at high volumes. Particularly if there are nearby radio transmitters. I would avoid turning it up that loud in future. Also, upping your source may improve things as a cd5si is a bit below the recommended option on a SN2. Try a CDX2 or NDX streamer instead.

I have had my SN2 as high as 3 o'clock but only once or twice and not for long - driving Focal 926s it was damned damned loud but I didn't have any buzzing at all. The only buzz I get from my system is from the transformers in the amp and power supply. Seems strange to hear one input device when you have another device selected to me

Is this normal on Supernait 2?

I have a Supernait 2 and have noticed the following issues: 1) When I use my Marantz NA8005, or Cd5si, and crank up the volume to 75% it will fault with excess current. 2) My na8005 is connected through the tunner input. when I select another input that has no connection and put the volume up I can hear what ever is being output through my NA8005.  3) I hear a lot of humming through my speakers when I crank up the volume on empty inputs. Thank You Equipment Supernait 2, Marantz Na8005,...

I heard a Nait 5si with Dynaudio Focus 260 speakers at my dealer -- the combination sounded great, and really showed what the Nait can do! But -- I would get a Naim CD5XS (or a Sonos/NDAC) before sinking more money into the speakers.

How big is your room? Have a friend who had X16 with a 5i and he said it worked but thought the 5i struggled a bit at higher volumes. I would assume that would apply to the X18 as well but would be fine with the X14. Depending on how big your room is and how loud you like to listen may answer your question between the two. I would like to hear the X18 and compare to the Focus 160.

Depends on your ears. Tough for me say what you may prefer. Some think the KEF are a bit fatiguing with their highs and they lack some low end. Others like that about them. I gave a pair of Dynaudio XEO 3 in another room and really enjoy them when I get to play them. For small speakers they play much larger than they are. Fir the type of music you listed I would tend to think Dynaudio is better but your ears may not agree with me.

NAIT XS 2 with Marantz CD6006 vs a used Naim CD player

seakayaker ·
I have just purchased a NAIT XS 2 with a Marantz CD6006 and ProAc Response D2 Speakers. Although from a budget point of view I could not purchase a new Naim CD player at this point in time, I have seen some used CD players, CD3.5, CD5i and CDX. Any opinions regarding swapping out the Marantz for one of the used CD players? This is my first time using Naim and the dealer informed me that the NAIT and the Speakers will need playing time to burn in. I am impressed with the music right out of...

There may be. I'd look at the CD5XS as a perfect partner to your Nait. You could then add a Flatcap XS power supply later on to upgrade both the Nait and the CD5XS. The used players are good but mechanisms may not be available for all of them now - it's worth checking with Naim if you want to go down that route. Your system is new so i'd let it run in and just enjoy it. Go and take a listen to the CD5XS when you feel the need for an upgrade. No need to rush

The £250 Marantz really has no place with the superb Nait XS and the ProAcs. The player you want is the CD5XS. Have a look around Naim dealers for an ex dem or used one and hopefully you can bag a bargain.

If the aforementioned cd5xs(the natural partner with the nait xs/xs2)is a bit above your budget at the moment...still circa £1200 used then a cd5i mk2 (italic)can be found for attractive prices....I seen one go for around £350 the other week on that well known auction site....it's a fantastic wee player for that kind of money and could well do you until funds allow for the xs unit.

I would not bother with a flatcap. I ran one with a Nait XS amplifier and a CD5XS for over 2 years. I took it out of the system when my cd player had to go for repair and never put it back. I could not tell the difference when the CD5XS returned and 18 months later would not the flatcap again.

If you don't have need for digital output the CD5X, predecessor to the CD5XS, represents even greater VFM on the s/h market. It's a sweet pairing with the Nait XS .

IMO a CD5XS has two issues to deal with One is price new Second is its not a finished product as it can be upgraded with seperate power supply Maybe a used CDX is just as good choice now you are thinking of invest big money but again the XPS is next step to get a finished product Another great and much cheaper alternative is a Rega cd player Not quite up to a Naim 5XS allthough I heard some people actually like Rega better, it may be down to own choice. Not trying to throw a cat among the pigeons, but lately I've been using a Rega Apollo-r into a 72/Hi/140/Totem Arros setup, and the cd player certainly isn't out of place in this context. My CDS2 is off to the doctor for some repairs, so when it returns, it will be interesting to see how much I have been missing. Or not. The Rega seems to have everything that is important to me regarding cd playback. I am using it with a Tibia power cord, and a Flashback Cables RCA to Din Performance...

FWIW, I found that a used CD5X + FC2X handily beat my new-at-the-time Oppo BDP-95 for CD replay; the latter having a rather good reputation for same. I was prepared for the Oppo to win, or tie, at worst. Big and pleasant surprise, though box count went up. Your Marantz may be very good -- similar good reputation as Oppo, I think. I would be interested in your findings. Best of luck. Nick

This reminds me of my early Naim days, then I had a Marantz KI63 signature then introduced a Nait 3 into Dynaudio 40s. The Marantz stayed for around a year, good player really enjoyed the KI/Nait3 combo but then purchased a Naim CD3.5, marked improvement in every area. As others have mentioned a CD5xs would be perfect and when funds become available go for it.

Great speaker, great amp, needs a better front-end IMHO. And maybe try Tellurium Q Black speaker cables? CD players are really coming to an end, with such a fine speakers and amp do them a favour and get into the world of steaming audio, its not at all difficult now. The kit available these days really is 'plug and play' As you've just purchased the XS it'd be rude of me to say get a SuperUniti, as that's a SuperNait2 with built in NDX streamer. Any Naim CD player will be a great choice, CD5XS being the obvious. However I'm 100% in agreement with Spacey, CD is nearing the end of life, although I'm sure it will remain the choice for years to come, now might be the time to stop, count to ten & consider were you want to go. Naim have reduced the model count dramatically in the last year & Linn stopped making them as long ago as 2009, all reflecting sales of the medium. With a Naim network player you get streaming from your own...
