New Uniti Range

Supermotion ·
Dear Naim, I'm looking to move to your new range but I have a few questions: 1/ I currently have a MUSO (love it!) but can I add a Uniti Core to it? 2/ If I banish the MUSO to the bedroom and get a Uniti Atom with separate speakers, can I use this in the same way as my MUSO today? 3/ Can I add the Uniti Core at a later date to the Atom? 4/ If I get the the Uniti Star is this an all in on unit but basically the same as separate Atom + Core? 5/ With any of the above can I use Uniti to sync...

Some answers (but not all): 1.) Yes, you can add the Uniti Core to your network and stream the music via UpnP to the mu-so. 2.) Sure! 3.) Yes, as I've mentioned before, just add the Core at a later date to your network and stream to the mu-so and Core at the same time... 4.) Difficult one, I guess the answer would be yes ... 5.) I have no experience with this one, maybe other forum members may comment about this ...

Thank you for your answers. for Q5, I guess my question is basically about sending playlists or copying music to my device from the Uniti Core / storage part of the system. This is quite an important point for me because I don't want to have my music collection restricted to only at home when I use my Uniti storage.

With a Unitiserve, you can transfer files to other devices easily. I put music on my Walkman from it by simple drag and drop via a computer. I'd be surprised if the Core lost this ability. Not sure about playlist transfer, though.

Just an FYI - Although this is the Naim forum we don't actively trawl the forums and so questions here will usually be picked up by other forum members and they will usually be able to assist however if you specifically want to get someone from Naim then there are contact details in either the sticky at the top of each forum and in the side bar on the right. It just happens that with the release last week we're keeping a bit closer an eye on here at the moment to try to keep information on...

New Uniti range in Toronto this week.

Manu ·
The new Unti range will be on demonstation all afternoon at Bay Bloor Radio in Downtown Toronto on Wednesday the 26th. No need to book. Alan Burns from Naim and Emmanuel Le Quéré from Plurison will be on site to show the great new features of the Core and Atom. Demonstration will be held with Totem and Neat speakers. The same products will be on demo at the TAVES Consumer Electronic Show at the Sheraton Parkway in Richmond Hill, north of Toronto, during the weekend of October 28 - 30. You...

Core Konvert

DUPREE ·
I did not initially see the hype or excitement around the Uniti Core, it seemed the least exciting of the new uniti range - a warmed up uniti serve doing mostly what a synology does. However a listen and comparison at my dealer revealed what a great value and cool device this is. When directly connected via digital to a DAC V1 or 272 it is clearly exceeds the NDX and is on par with the NDS at minimum. The resolution and detail improvements were clearly there and amazing. This little box...

Just to be clear, you compared connections via upnp and direct digital with the core and found the direct method better?

Re: Core Konvert

I found that the core with direct attached storage was equal or better than the NDS streaming from a UPnP NAS both connected to the same systems. I have not done the comparison of whether using it just as a UPnP server makes a difference. > On Dec 31, 2016, at 5:39 PM, Naim Audio Forums < alerts@hoop.la > wrote: >

Very, very interesting. i have wondered since Phil Harris' observation whether the Core might be a match for other store-renderers that receive rave reviews, like Melco, Innuos zennith and MAc Mini/Audirvana. It would be good to hear others' assessments: if this is a universal conclusion then it is a real challenger to the competition (and one on my own list of potential replacements when my MM has had its day), avoiding all the hassles and potential problems of streaming files across a...

And it has both functions so it fits my use case perfectly hooking it directly to the NAC-N 272 digital in on the main system and still being able to act as a UpNP server for the remote MuSo QB over the network. It is the heart of a really great system - seems like they really did their homework on the newly arriving products... > On Dec 31, 2016, at 6:56 PM, Naim Audio Forums < alerts@hoop.la > wrote: >

Very interesting to read Dupree. What was type and reference of the direct drive installed on the Core? I would be curious to know how the Core would have compared here to US HDD (no NAS). Happy new year to all. Chag -

No it was a 250DR and Nac-N 272 exactly as I have at home. We figured that would give the best frame of reference for its capabilities in my system.

When I get a chance I will set an appointment with Ken to compare the Core to a CD player. The Core was unable to read the title or track names of one of my two discs I brought along but had no problem playing the music.

Re: Core Konvert

I don't have any CD's anymore so my only comparison was playing high-res files. I would assume the CD ripping would also be very good. I think all those devices are limited if the CD tracks are not in GraceNote or other database as the CD format does not have track name metadata on it.

So according to various recent posts..... The Core is better than the NDS The Unitiserve is better than the Core A Synology NAS with Minim is better than a Unitiserve. .......and a thread asserting that the Law of Increasing Returns now applies to HiFi. I can feel an upgrade frenzy coming on!

Re: Core Konvert

I am confused by this comparison. Surely in the case of the NDS trial you would have been using the Core too as the server from which the NDS was streaming? Hence, it seems odd to compare the Core with the NDS. Maybe the confusion arises from the use of the word 'both' in your sentence. If I understand correctly, the 272 includes a built-in streamer which can work in place of the NDS, but would still need the Core as its server. Personally I would like to compare the Core with the NS01,...

The Core is a "server." The players are the "streamers."

Why would they do that? The cost saving in parts would be negligible and there is no reason why having the CD ripper in there not being used would affect SQ. I suspect the market for such a scaled-back Core would be minute, so it could actually cost a lot more than a normal core. best David

Strange, all these observations and opinions. I recall the introduction of the HDX about 8 years ago. There were numerous threads were the general consensus was that as an 'all-in-one' solution it was nice, but that a seperate NAS and ripping with software like dBPoweramp provided an equally well result... Somewhere these opinions might have changed ...

The core also has a direct digital output. The comparison was the Core itself rendering vs the streamer playing the same track from a NAS. > On Jan 1, 2017, at 4:14 AM, Naim Audio Forums < alerts@hoop.la > wrote: >

Re: Core Konvert

The Core can function as a file server, just like a NAS, streaming music files to a 'streamer', the latter consisting of a renderer and internal DAC, producing analogue audio output. In some cases people use a Naim streamer purely as a renderer, feeding the rendered digital audio to an external DAC (NDX seems to feature often in posts describing this, said to be a good renderer. The Core also has a built-in renderer, so can feed a rendered digital audio stream direct to a DAC. With this...

some people have tested innuos zenith, melco, and cad servers. But a majority of them said that the prat is not so good as with unitserve. But other preferred these models .....it seems difficult to know if they are better than unitserve, associated with streamers/dac like ndx or nds. I am very curious for the uniti core, to see if i can upgrade my nds/555dr/unitserve tp ps combo.

I have just replaced a unitiserve ssd and heavily filtered tp ps, with a Core, driving SPDIF into an nDAC/XPSDR. 'Chalk vs Cheese' is an understatement. Firstly, the tp ps is a noisy device, eliminating this noisy supply is likely to improve your system, and the Core is the easiest way to do this. Just having it powered on by itself degrades USB playback from my nDAC with the Serve off and disconnected (this is on an isolated and heavily filtered mains feed). J Saville recently reported an...

the unitserve is best the unitserve is not at his best in spdif mode, so as a player. It is at his best as server, in ethernet mode with a streamer/ dac as ndx or nds. So i believe your experience, but when the same comparaison will be made in ethernet mode, by a certain number of persons, and give the same conclusions as you, i will believe that the core is better than the unitserve. The Core does not have internet radio and no support for streaming services, so unless you only need to play and stream local files you will need a streamer with these functions. Claus

thanks chag, i know you have the same question as me. I am a bit impatient because i bought a unitserve 6 months ago. If the core sounds better, i will try to replace my serve by the core by my hi-fi dealer and just buy ssd drive for it. I will loose a little money, but more if i do it after one year( unitserve with guarantee is easier to sell).
