Just pressed the GO button for DR on 300

asked my dealer this morning to get my 300 serviced and moreover DR - changed earlier this year from 200 to 300 which was a real upgrade, prob the biggest step up for me since i began the journey some 17 years ago - 202 to 282 was very good and certainly added a lot more detail but the 300 was a real WOW moment when added

rest of system LP12, NDX,282,HCDR, Fraim - ideally if funds allow this year 555 for the NDX or SC for 282

Regards

ANTHONY D,

A couple of questions if I may as my system is similar and I have a upgrade in mind.

Did you try a 250dr before deciding on the 300.?.The 250 dr was my next potential upgrade.

Have you tried a psu on the ndx or a supercap on the 282.? I ask a super-cap on my 282 maybe a better upgrade than moving from my 200 to 250dr.

I couldn't unfortunately justify a 555 but I purchased a xps2 dr and was very, very happy with what it done for my ndx.

I see you are relatively new to this forum. it would be very helpful if you could provide details of your current system in your profile. In that way you might benefit from the huge amount of knowledge available on this forum. Many members have wide experience of the potential upgrades you are thinking about.

Whoa... hold on there.  Let's get things in perspective, please... SC for 282 has to be the higher priority.  The 555 on an NDX will be good, but nowhere near what an upgraded 282 can give you,

BTW, I'm thinking hard but as far as I can recall my 300 didn't have a 'Go' button... have they changed things?

It's the small button on the right hand side of the front panel of the 300PS.

If you don't push it in, nothing comes out of the speakers!

Ok,will do AndrewG,thanks.

To get the ball rolling.

ndx - xps2 dr - 282 - hicap dr - napsc - 200 - bowers + Wilkins pm1's

The DR upgrade on the 300 is a wonderful thing. I did it before the Supercap powering my 252 (ordered before Xmas) and the 555 on my NDX (perhaps in 2019). You will love it.

I went in that order because I bought my 300 just before the pre-DR discount, which left a bit racked off. However, I don’t think the order is that important as it’s all good.

I can echo this sentiment. No doubt the NAC 282 and Hicap DR form a well balanced system but you've got to get those two outputs of the 282 connected to realise its full potential.

spent a day on demo's with my dealer going through all the options early last year to get a plan and budget in place, i can't praise them enough for the advise and guidence  given - Cymbiosis in L'ster used them for over 15 years

my system then was NDX/282/HCDR/200 with no Fraim - also use an LP12 the split is about 80% NDX

so we spent the morning on various combinations to improve the system in stages to help me with a plan & budget tried lot's of combo's - inc XPSDR, the best set up then was NDX/555/282/HCDR/250DR

we agreed at the end of the day plan way

  1. Fraim - straight away
  2. 250DR - hopefully in 2017
  3. 555 for NDX - wish list
  4. upgrade HCDR to SC for 282  - sometime in futre

added the Fraim in early spring - NOT at all dispointed with the increase on the whole system

I then contacted by dealer again in late summer for an ex demo 250DR, they had just taken in SH 300 non DR from 2010 - no contest, grabbed the 300 and its off at the end of this month for DR and service

just love the 300 and what it add's to the system

Do Naim provide a service as part of the DR upgrade?

boxes are ready, taking the 300 in the morning to my dealer,  will report back going to listen to a few favorite tracks this evening so I can play when I get the 300DR back to make a comparason on DR -

That seems a rather rapid turnaround, but hope it goes well.

had a call from my dealer yesterday 300 now DR & serviced has been returned from Salisbury, impressive turn around dealer sent it to NAIM on 29th Jan - arrived back 8th Feb

can't wait to get it back in to system might have a POETS afternoon???? and go and get it

Nice to see that things can go fast. Maybe it is better just to send in one unit. For my dr 555 252 and Snaxo it took about 8 weeks, but that includes Christmas. It seems that Snaxo took a long time to recap.

POETS

First time I've heard that expression for years! In a previous life working in an office in central London, it was used quite regularly.

Also in the RN

Hope your DR'd 300 sounds fab AD.

The slight touch of brightness that came with the DR boards to be the only downside of this upgrade has disappeared here after a year and 300 listening hours. The 300 has now regained a great part of that mattity that many classical music lovers appreciate.

Chag -

the 300 is back took NAIM just under 2 weeks to get it back to my dealers following the DR - already can hear the difference focus, seperation just more music - as I said to my dealer it is almost asking you to improve source

great service from Cymbiosis as ever, Peter passed by the house yesterday to install -  Feb has been a busy month in the wine trade for me!

thoughts for later this year now turn to SCDR for the 282???

Update on the DR, little light reading for the weekend, my NAIM journey started back in 2003 when I walked into a shop in Leicester - one of my colleagues owned NAIM CD and said I should go and listen - which I did, purchased CD5 and 200 - the 200 remained in my system through a lot a changes but that was a constant

back in the summer i wanted to get an ex demo 250DR my dealer said he had just had in a 300 on PX, jumped at it - the non DR 300 is a superb amp, separation control detail - one of the best and biggest upgrades I had ever done - so to 2018 asked my dealer to book the 300 in for a service and DR back in Salisbury - the whole process took a couple of weeks

Peter Swain came by last Sunday to install the now 300DR into the system - on first turning it on - they was certainly no WOW dare I say it was almost dull, after some 6 hours the sound changed - more focus & detail which has continued, last night played Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells remastered half speed - that was the WOW moment, the 300 DR had really found it's sweet sport, I have a feeling there is more to come from other posts I have seen

So 2 points from my ramble - DR update is outstanding - but could almost be called delayed response!!

And as we all know work with you dealer, I can't praise Peter Swain and his team at Cymbiosis enough , yes you chose the Journey and your dealer whoever that might me be but should ensure you are on the right bus - MINE HAS! the 300 non is DR is a stunning AMP the 300DR is nothing short of breath-taking detail focus, musical seperation, control

My AMP journey is complete!

300 isn't the sort of amp to grab you by the ears. Yet it excels with such ease and subtity. If listened to for 2 weeks in a system, then rolled back to the previous amp, it's like being hit with a brick as the HiFi comes storming back and all the beautiful music disappears.

Hi Harry, I have to disagree. It depends what you play. For example the 45rpm remastered Couldn’t Stand the Weather by Stevie Ray Vaughn is epic. One side is dedicated to Tin Pan Alley and the 300DR gives it real menace and muscle power. It’s simply breathtaking. Likewise “Lay it Down” off Larry Carlton’s “String Theory” just slams you in the gut yet with all the beauty and finesse that the 300 does so well.

regards

Godfrey

If your 300 replaced an amp that wasn't able to convey the power and slam of those tracks, it must have been a very poor amp indeed. I don't think you would have to shell out at 300 level to get an amp that could do that.

The 300 can do all that, of course. I thought it was so obvious that it didn't need saying. Do you think Naim could sell an amp at that price point if it didn't rock on demand? It's what else it can do that can unexpectedly delight.
