Stageline N + Olive flatcap + Nait 5i2

Has anyone run this combination?  My NAIM dealer has recommended the Lehmann Black Cube over the Stageline.  I already am using the flatcap to power my CD3.5 and am wondering about using it for the Stageline instead of going with the Black Cube.

What is best?  My turntable is a Rega P3-24 with Elys ii.  Looking for an upgrade path for my Cambridge Audio 640P.

I haven't tried it. It will work. It raises questions, such as will you be happy with the reduced performance from the CD player? And when was the olive FC last serviced?

I own a Stageline, like it and easily recommend it. However my view (and plenty disagree) is that it's not the greatest match with Rega cartridges for which I prefer the synergy of the Rega Fono.

You need some dealer dems as the Black Cube and your 640P are well thought of at their respective price points.

Alright... received 4-5 cable and hooked it up and tried it out.  Running with the olive flatcap, I compared it to my 10 year old Cambridge Audio 640P.  By comparison the Stageline sounded very thin and lacking dynamic range.  Not sure if this is a breaking in, issue with the Stageline or something to do with the age of my flatcap.

I also observed a surprisingly LOW gain on the Stageline.  Compared to 640P and CD sources, I have to crank up the volume significantly.  Using my N-Vi I have to go from 30 to 45 on the settings for example on my NAIT 5i2 I have to run the volume in the 11-12 o'clock territory which I never do to make it sound like a 10 o'clock setting.  Looking at the gain specifications the Stageline is 35db and the Cambridge Audio is 39 db @ 1kHz for MM cartridges.

So far not happy with the Stageline Sound.

I think your FC is tired out, probably untouched for twenty years.

Leave it all powered up for a couple of days and it might improve a bit. You are not the first to report low gain for the Stageline but where's the harm in running a Nait 5i at 12 rather than 10?!

Ok, received the recapped flatcap and the dynamic range improved significantly. Compared to the Cambridge Audio, the music is more refined and complex. The Piano sounds more like a piano as does the cello.

The gain on the stageline is still lower than hoped for. I feel that it may amplify static/dust to a higher level compared to my Cambridge Source but is hard to quantify.

Overall it is a step up from the Cambridge 640P sonically and economically.

The SL gain will not change with a recapped FC of course. A Rega Fono MM MKII will be a better choice sound- and gain wise.
