UPnP server with Last.fm support?

Patu ·
I just pulled the trigger on pre-loved Naim NDX and am about to move to the world of streaming. For now, I've been using foobar2000 as my music player and media library on PC. It supports last.fm scrobbling through plugin. Now is there a way to get UPnP server (any of them?) to scrobble to last.fm? I will still use my PC as server so maybe some UPnP server would work with the last.fm desktop app or something? I'd seriously want to make this work. I've been scrobbling since 2005 and it's...

What's wrong with those samples?

retepqt ·
The samples that make up a piece of digital music should hit the D/A-converter w/o getting corrupted. How hard can it be? A streamer with a built-in D/A-converter should have no problem with that. When the poor samples have to travel over...

Re: New system trials - Q, SU, SN2, ND5, DAC, NDX

Great system. Two suggestions, at some point think about a better power supply for the Serve, as it makes a big difference (see my profile) and get some decent Ethernet cables to connect the serve and NDX to an Ethernet switch. Then connect the switch to the router. Before getting my SU, I had a nat02 with my olive system. I was surprised how palatable the SU's FM section is on R3 and R4, though the two channels' Hidef Internet channels are very good too - you should try them and may then...

Hungryhalibut - your rec of PS upgrade to the Serve is exactly what my dealer mentioned. I plan to let my equipment and ears settle in for a while and then will explore upgrades. Regarding FM - I had really wanted to keep my box count low, but FM is still important to me and the dealer gave me a terrific price on the Nat.

Zeny - funny you should mention that. I did several other "brief" trials, including the NDX/DAC. First, the Q/DAC combo - this was more a demonstration in the extreme of what the DAC is capable of - and it was a pretty amazing upgrade. Second, the NDX/DAC - it was at the end of one of my trial sessions - so my ears were tired. I did not take it seriously because my budget was already very stretched. With that, here are my impressions. Substantial increase in black space, slightly more detail...

I'll give the DAV 1 ..... and a little special one as well It brings music alive from old recordings, new recordings, CD Redbook standard, DVD film sound-tracks, MP3, radio on AAC, and even youtube! [I have never heard it with Hires!] It just gets on with extracting the music from the medium and sending it joyfully to the amp and speakers. It's like a faithful dog, It only wants to please and be loved! ATB from George

To this I must add the following - Naim's current range is excellent - and I would strive for system balance, first and foremost. I currently recommend two systems: a) Dac-V1/Nap 100. b) NDX/SN2/HiLine. I would go so far as to say the Hi-Line is essential to smooth out some of the jagged edges. The HiCap-DR can come later. The Dac-V1 sounds excellent as a source to the SN2 too. The separates range is due for a refresh so I wouldn't buy separates new. I would go so far as to say that the SN2...

Cayman, I'm late to the thread, however I say if you have a NDX you already have a very fine Network player source. If you want to improve its transparency and your enjoyment from it then I would look at the pre, poweramp and speakers. The NDX into a 282/HiCapDR into a 200 or for more control, wight, authority and timbral transparency the 250.2 makes a superb and musical partnering amp. The integrated amps are good, but you will ultimately get more mileage from the NDX using Naim seperates...

The NDX is 'better' than the Dac-V1. Which one you find more enjoyable is a different question. The NDX is certainly more open, specially in the upper registers. The Dac-V1 is a little warmer sounding - you'll have to add a PSU to the NDX to get that warmth.

Re: Faulty Display on NDX

Andrew, I believe there are a few NDX users on here that have had the connector to the display work loose even though the boxes aren't moved. Obviously you will be pointed towards your dealer having a check first before it goes back to Naim. I believe a member has investigated the fault himself though Richard and others will be quick to advise against due to warranty issues and electrostatic precautions being required. I hope that your issue is that straight forward. Maccaa

It'll sound different but not necessarily better. I'd add an XPS2 to the NDX or add the Naim DAC if you are looking for an upgrade.

FLAC = free, therefore neither apple or MS support it. This is the route of your issues. If you set up a UPNP server from the nas there should be no issue.

Not sure whether this is related in any way to your problem EnataiDan but last week my SuperUniti stopped playing or recognizing flacs. The vast majority of my collection is WAV with a few wma and mp3 rarities. All those would still play but I got the "source err" message (I only stream). Powering off the unit cured it's bizarre behaviour. So far so good...

Re: Unable to play FLAC files on NDX

Dan I'm 99% sure it's a server issue. Have you tried the DLNA server built into Win8? That is separate from HomeGroup, but maybe it's what you're doing. I've not tried it myself and have no idea if it's willing to serve flac files or not. Moving to a nas is the right way to go. You'll use a different server on the nas, and have a totally different set of issues with it, but playing flac should not be an issue.

Re: Unable to play FLAC files on NDX

Simon-in-Suffolk ·
Dan, I agree with Bert, the NDX is happy with FLAC but the supporting server has got to recognise the FLAC files for it to play them. From how you describe it your UPnP/DLNA server is not finding your FLAC files, which is why NStream its not showing them and therefore why the NDX can't play them. On your other point, for the most part Apple devices don't recognise FLAC, so again it appears the Apple device is not sending the FLAC file to NDX. Use a UPnP/DLNA player like Asset/Minimserver etc...

Hi there, It is worth checking the DS Audio settings - I 'think' the application may be reducing the quality of the audio to allow it to stream without buffering. Check your settings in the app. If you use the nStream app it will try and play the file without any transcoding and you could be having issues with your network bandwidth to play the HiRes files without buffering.
