Streaming iTunes music to a UnitiQute

Posted by: Michel Werner on 13 October 2011

Hi,

I am a newbie to this section so please apologize for the silly questions.

I have just bought a UnityQute and want to stream music from my Mac using iTunes libraries. Looking at older posts, I got that one solution might be the use of Majestic or Eyeconnect to have the Mac working as an UPnP server. Is that correct? Has anyone an idea about what might be the best iTunes streaming solution?

I just installed the latest version of iTunes which has a sharing option. Can it be recognized by the UnityQute?

In the future, I will replace my CDX2 by an HDX. Then, I will set up a NAS. But for the time being, I would like to stay with the simplest solution.

Thank you for your help,

Michel

Michel - Majestic or Playback will work fine. Having moved from a Linn DS to the NDX I've explored various UPnP solutions for the Mac as i wanted complete integration with my iTunes library as that is how i manage my music. I've settled on Playback as Majestic serves up the artwork compressed but functionaly they both work fine. You can get a demo version of Playback to try - the full version is about £10.

Hi James,

I setup my UnityQute with Playback. Easy. Worked flawlessly.

I also have the n-Stream iApp to pilot the Qute.

The UnityQute plays into a pair of ProAc Tablette anniversary. Its a great combination, lots of details, basses are there. I enjoy it a whole lot.

Thank you for your help,

How it handles hidef files?

Neil, Manu,

I am unable to answer your questions. I just used Playback to listen to Apple lossless files archived with iTunes. Maybe James can answer?

Neil - its just playing the file in its native format. In my case AIFF at various bit rates / depths. I don't think these UPnP servers support transcoding.

Playback does not transcode.  It will play back FLACs natively, including hi res.

Majestic will transcode, but only to mp3.

EyeConnect will transcode ALAC to WAV.

Playback handles the artwork from iTunes and works well with nStream. I have had a couple of issues with some album artwork not appearing.

I've got some things to try from the developers at playback to sort the issue out.
