Pre-recording Internet Radio

Posted by: Staedtler on 20 October 2011

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a program to pre-record internet radio?

I currently use Screamer, which is great for what it does, but only records in real time. I would like to pre-program to record so that I don't have to be there to start and end recordings.

I'm running Windows XP.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

Hi Ian, I think the software Total Recorder by High Criteria will be just the thing for you. It's pretty cheap and will record anything that passes through your soundcard. You can set it to start and stop recording at a pre-selected time. Once the recording has finished you can even select an option so the software will shut your PC down.

I've used it for years now. Initially the standard version and now the professional version. Highly recommended. It must be about 5 years since I bought it and I still get 'free' upgrades to the latest version.

There is even a video add-on enabling you to record screen activity via the graphics card, so it can become a sort of video recorder for i-player TV programs or youtube or whatever.

Gav,

Thanks for that, sounds like what I'm looking for. I take it the functionality I want is in the base rather than professional version too?

Having had a look at the program online (should have done that before initially replying and now can't edit it) , it would appear that you need to be playing the internet broadcast through another piece of software at the time of recording i.e. Screamer. I would still need to be downloading the content separately before it could be recorded and I would need to be there to start Screamer.

Is this correct?

Hi Ian. I don't quite understand your question. Some kind of player is always needed to play internet radio stations. For example, the BBC radio stations play via the BBC's i-player browser-based player. I listen to PlanetRock via their own browser-based player. Don't you just navigate to the website of the radio station of which you're interested and hit the 'listen' button?

When a radio station is playing via the default browser-based player on a pc, you can then open Total Recorder and hit the record button and a copy is made of whatever is passing through the sound card. You can choose a format to record in and a place to save the recorded sound file.

If I wanted to record something when I am out of the house (and there is no listen again service!) then I would need to leave my PC on with the station playing then open TR and set a time for it to start and stop recording. When it's finished, TR will turn my PC off. It has all sorts of other clever options that to be honest I've not bothered to investigate.

I hope this helps.

Sorry for the confusion.

I was after an all-in-one solution that would access internet radio that could also then be pre-programmed to record something from it. Screamer, as an internet radio program, can record whatever is being played through it, but the recording function cannot be pre-set.

I was wanting to try avoid having to leave a station playing before something could record it, as it would appear Total Recorder needs.

Thanks for your help so far.

Right, I've got you. Yes this is available with the professional version. I have copied a section from the relevant Total Recorder tutorial below for your info:

How to schedule a recording using the Professional or VideoPro Edition

With the Professional and VideoPro Editions, the scheduler not only lets you start Total Recorder at the required time and record audio being played back on your computer, it also allows the playback program to be launched each time a scheduled recording starts.  Using the scheduler, you can also program Total Recorder to connect to a pre-defined Internet web site and play the transmission that you wish to record. The transmission starts and closes automatically. It eliminates the requirement for you to leave your browser active and connected to a web site when you have scheduled recordings of Internet transmissions.

To record an Internet transmission, you should either obtain the full URL of the transmission, or tune Total Recorder's mini-browser on to this transmission.

To schedule the recording of a file in the Professional or VideoPro Edition of Total Recorder, you need to indicate the times to start and stop the recording, the recording source and parameters (such as the format), the name of the file that will be recorded, and the location in which to save the recorded file when the scheduled job completes. You can select many other parameters that will help you attain the desired results.

DAR.fm looks like a pretty interesting service -- "TIVO for Internet Radio".

Broadcast guides, recording, cloud storage, etc..

If you want to download a BBC iplayer program then get_iplayer is a good tool.
