Network player with alarm-clock function?

Posted by: aysil on 26 October 2011

I have been away from this forum for some time due to very busy weeks organizing the iDANS Festival. I really missed exchanging ideas with you. I hope to start posting again soon; actually some of my posts were already ready just waiting for some small corrections!

During this intense period, I had to wake up earlier than usual. I try to make this moment of being torn away from sweet dreams as pleasurable as possible by some good music. Sometimes, I also like to sleep into some music. Years ago, the best device with clock function I could find for my bedroom was Linn Classik Music, which fulfils its function to date. I even upgraded it with external power-amps. However, network music could open up new possibilities, connecting and playing music stored in your main system.

I wonder why none of the Naim network players/stream clients has a clock function incorporated. Are there any other devices that you could recommend?

Aysil

SuperUniti has a clock and alarm facility built in.

Quite a heavyweight for an alarm radio though

I also believe future s/w updates to Qute/Uniti and ND5XS/NDX (not 100% sure about these last two, but wouldn't be surprised?) will incorporate these facilities too.

Quite right Tony. Upgrades to come for the others apart from NDX / XS

Hmmm, Naim seems to provide answers before I manage to ask the question.

Very happy to hear this. Are the built-in clocks immune to power outage and independent of mains frequency?

The clock feature should actually arrive with the pre Xmas software update.

That news article above is regarding a hardware upgrade that is not required to get the clock feature. The hardware update will enable 192kHz playback and Apple Lossless.

The clock syncs from an internet time server so is pretty accurate.

Tom, will the software allow you to select your own NTP server or will it be hardwired?

TJ, any plans to add a sleep function to the alarm clock? Thanks!

@Simon

Set to a sensible default but with the ability for user to change.

@Nagoya

No plans at the moment

OK, no problem, TJ. I was hoping the Uniti etc could double as an old fashioned clock-radio, albeit a pretty expensive one. Thanks!

The Qute uses the following time servers as default: 0.pool.ntp.org and 1.pool.ntp.org

You can set it to display the time instead of a blank screen.

You can set times for weekday and weekend operation, and the volume.

Does this mean the clock feature will be available also for NDX and ND5XS?
