Need help with nStream 2.2 app

Posted by: WTM on 27 October 2011

I moved my Uniti to a different room and it's on the network just fine BUT the nStream app no longer works (on either my iPad or iPhone).  I updated to the 2.2 but still no joy.  I tried re-entering the IP add (from the Uniti's profile) but the app on both devices say it can't find the Uniti.  Now I'm really confused. Again, the Uniti is on the network, I'm streaming music from a UPnP drive as I type.

I'm hoping that someone here can help me get tis problem solved, it's quite vexing and browsing through my music is rather tedious without nStream.  "Help me Mr. Wizard?"  Thanks

Almost certainly a network issue.  Not sure on the Unity but had the same issues on an NDX.  You may need to fix the IP address of the Unity and also make sure your router reserves the address you have fixed for the Unity.

@Rich27,

Thanks, that might be the ticket.  When I switched the Unity to the new room DHCP did assign it a different IP address.  I'll go play with my router and see if I can fix this little problem.  I appreciate you taking the time to help me here.

Hi that's strange, your Nstream should use a broadcast discovery mechanism to find the Uniti/ndx on the same network. If broadcasts are not working across the wireless network at layer 2, for whatever reason ( this would be down to your wireless access point/router) then the Nstream will fail to see the ndx/Uniti. Hardwiring the layer 3 ip address will help you bypass this issue but you might run into other problems later.

@Simon,

Thanks (btw, I love that avatar/picture).  It IS the strangest thing.  I've had the Uniti in it's "new" location before and everything worked peachy.  I just got done fooling around in my router and everything's jake there.  I really do apprecite you taking the time to try helping me out.  I had not thought of your suggestion perhaps I'll give that a go this evening.  I know it's NOT the Uniti at fault, but a) the router (though that seems strange since the Uniti has spent most of it's life in this room, same router too) or b) the app (though I don't think that's the problem either).  But I'm gonna get it figured out.  I appreciate your help Simon.

On my system With N stream it says no devices found in the setup menu, but it still seems to work ok. I have given my qute a fixed ip address

Hi WTM, good luck with the investigations.
I chuckled when I read your post... The picture is 'The Hood', who was the chief baddy in the late 60s Gerry Anderson''s puppet based science fiction cult series, Thunderbirds. I was always petrified of The Hood as a child, especially when his eyes lit up, as in the photo...

Simon,

Thanks for letting me know about your avatar. When I was a kid I used to watch Thunderbirds, but I guess it's been too long.  Here's the funny bit; a few months ago I was browsing through some close-out DVDs and found a couple of Thunderbirds collections. I recalled the show (from when dinosaurs roamed the earth) and bought both collections as well as some Tom Baker Dr. Who episodes.  Obviously, I have not watched them yet.  But now I think I'll give them a spin this evening.

I'm still working on the app problem.  I'll get this figured out.  But since I can still access the UPnP drive through the Unity and I've got my fave internet radio stations it's not a 'red flag' emergency, just vexing.

Thanks again for writing back to help me and about the way-cool avatar.  I hope it's as beautiful a day where you are as it is here in Dallas Texas.

@Steven Shaw,

Thanks for writing back.  I'm still trying to get this little brouhaha solved.  I did give my Uniti a fixed address last night but still don't have the app working again.  It's gotta be some setting in the router.  Though "why" stumps me.  The Uniti has been in this room before and the app worked peachy-keen.  This evening I'll take another stab at it.  I do appreciate your help.

try setting the Uniti IP as DHCP - Yes.

I encountered the same issue if fixed IP is used.

I believed Naim has to look into this BUG.

It's worthwhile remembering that the IP address on a network must be a combination of the device IP address and the subnet mask. DHCP takes care of it, but if you are using static, you must use the correct mask, or by definition the devices are on a different network (it's not about whether they are connected via a switch etc).
Therefore on a home network, unless you know what you are doing, always set the mask to 255.255.255,0 and use addresses in network 192.168.1.X. Also always steer clear of values of X of 0 and 255.
The other thing to noteis that your wireless AP must support broadcast and multicast. Many do but some don't, the Apple Airport Express is a good wireless AP that does support both.

I had the same problem with n-stream and i almost changed my decision about buying a ND5XS as my source upgrade however after spending a lot of time on internet i found the solution.

Just go to your router's web page and uncheck "block multicasting" box. This should solve your problem.

I am totally exasperated with n-stream.  It forever responds "streamer not responding", then connects and five minutes later, it's lost the connection again.

I got my ND5XS just before Christmas and I am converted completely from CD.  No going back!  I find the Synology DS Audio player for Ipod a more pleasing interface than n-stream, but for some reason it has a habit of cutting tracks short before playing the next.  If it wasn't for that I would use it over the n-stream app all the time.

@aloysiuschan: Thanks for writing and it is nice to know I'm not the only one with this issue.  In my case I ended up solving the problem (temporarily) by going wireless. Everything is working just peachy.  But I'll giving the DHCP setting a go.

@Simon-in-Suffolk:  Thanks Simon, I appreciate your help.  I'm totally stumped with this problem.  I've gone over my router, settings, etc numerous times and everything looks to be correct (though I might keep missing something).  Right now I have the problem solved (temporarily) by going wireless.  Everything is working fine right now, but this is a band-aid, not a solution.  I want the Uniti hardwired on the network.  It's time to tackle this once more and I'll be keeping your ideas handy when I get on this later this evening.

@Kev T: I've not encountered any issues in my home with n-stream itself.  In my home/network the app works great. My problem has been getting the Uniti back on the network when I moved it to a different room.  I have solved the problem temporarily by going "wireless."  But I still want my Uniti hardwired on the network.  I did have a Uniti-Serve in the system for about as year and did use the n-serve app with that.  It worked quite well, but I'm guessing that you've tried that app and it only controls what you listen to from the server, not the same as what n-stream does.

@buraka:  "Thank you" for he replay and idea.  I have the problem temporarily solved by going 'wireless' but that is just a band-aid.  I'll give your idea a go this evening.  That is something I don't believe I tried on my router (and Lord knows I think I've tried just about everything else at this point).

I seconded that hard-wired sound BEST. Good luck!
