VW Golf parts at good prices?

Posted by: bob atherton on 01 November 2011

My son, within just two days of passing his driving test, has managed to smash the drivers door mirror on our mk4 VW Golf, God bless him!

I asked our local garage what the cost to replace the plastic housings, mirror glass and spray the parts, as they only come primed.

The cost will be a very staggering £230.00. As our son will be paying for his damage caused this does seem a bit on the very steep side. I’m sure the garage will be using genuine VW parts and do a top job, but £230.00…!

Does anyone know of a good source for top quality parts for VW’s that maybe are not original VW?  Any help will be most appreciated by me and by Harry!

Breakers yard?

Due you have a local private VW service place? They are usually able to source, stuff that main dealers seem to think are part of a bigger whole.Like bumper bars instead of the whole bumper assembly.

£230 for the mirror , we went to the body shop our local VW dealer uses for a quote for a small rust spot on the edge of our Polo front passenger door, after 4 months the quote finally arrived £875. I have used the touchup paint.

Bob, have a ring round your local scrapyards, or better yet drop round in person and take a look at what's there.  The Mk IV Golf was a popular car so there are usually a few in most scrapyards and you may get just the right part at a good price.  Failing that, the internet can be your friend in this situation...

The good thing about eBay is you can often source the correct colour part.

I used to buy all my VW parts from these people, they used to specialise in VW and Volvo. Not sure if they do body parts, but may be worth a ring.

Bob,

The cost will be a very staggering £230.00.

Is that all? You are bloody lucky!

When some shameless ar**hole stole both my Passat mirrors by carefully removing them whilst the car was parked outside my house one night it cost ---  wait for it --- £1300 to replace them. It was a garage repair job and an insurance claim for me.

Fortunately, they did not damage the car bodywork, presumably as that might have triggered the car alarm.

Anyway that does not answer your specific question but I hope you manage to get a cheap replacement,

Graham, WOW, I mean, what can one say... £1300 for two mirrors. I will consider myself a lucky chap then ;-)

Thanks for all your useful help guys. I'm working my way through all of your ideas. I'm sure it will cost less that £230 and one hell of a lot less than £650 !
