ND5 XS "pops" when browsing library in n-Stream on iPhone?

Posted by: Somchie on 09 November 2011

When playing a song on my ND5 XS and at the same time browsing the music library on my iPhone with the n-Stream it makes the ND5 XS "pop". Not at all loud but very noticeable small popping sound when lets say go from the "Tori Amos"-folder and back to the root.

Rest of my system Nac202, Nap200, Napsc, HiCap. The ND5 XS uses a wired connection.

If it helps, I also get these "popping" sound from the 202 when chaining input and not having the volume turned all the way down. However the "pops" from my Nac202 is much much louder than the popping-sound the ND5 XS creates.

Any suggestions on this? It is rather annoying.

It sounds like your network is under pressure, its unlikely related to the 202

Whats your network set up, and where is the music stored/served up?

Thank you for your reply.

When listening to internet radio and browsing internet radio stations the pop does not occur.

I did try playing FLACs from a Nas, but no improvement.

However, going from ethernet to wifi did solve the issue. Strange!

From ethernet?

Check the line with a lap top, see what speed your are connecting at and what the throughput is like.

Somchie, is that with wired Ethernet or wireless. You say the pop doesn't occur with web radio? Does it occur when you stream mp3s or only WAV files? Does the pop occur each time you navigate around and data is being sent to your control point Nstream? Does the pop happen if you use the remote control and not apple control point.
Answers to this might indicate your network for some reason is struggling, like marginal wireless.

Wifi works flawless, wired ethernet does not. Probably something with the cabling between the two floors, switch on the first floor and Naim system on the second floor. I believe something is crippling the throughput when using wired ethernet.

The ND5 XS seems to drop the wifi connection if not being used for some hours? The router is the latest Apple Airport Extreme, and it is the only wifi product that does this. Not that much of a deal, but anyways! The most annoying thing is that it also drops the connection to my uPNP server on my Mac, and I have to restart the server software itself. So, it drops both wifi and the server connections. (it always sees the Netgear Readynas nas)

I just bought a new Netgear Readynas Ultra 2 just for the ND5XS so I hope this will work better!

If it's any consolation, I've spent most of the last week, since picking up the ND5XS, perfecting the arrangements with the network. We are lucky to have wired-Ethernet in the house but it was installed by a previous occupant and so we don't know the exact topology. Anyway, I wanted 24/192 streaming to work across the network but without the server or NAS in the same room as the main system. Achieving this with anything less than 24/192 was easy but 24/192, with no buffering issues, was another matter. I've got there eventually but driven my girl-friend insane with repeated disconection/reconnection

of various elements and trying various possible arrangements.

This in no way detracts from the ND5XS, which is brilliant. The Radio3 Flying Dutchman was a superb experience! All the more pleasurable because the Czech Republic is miles out of range of FM. Anyway, I have had NAT-01 and NAT-02's and I don't think either of them was better than the ND.
