Stoned in the 70s

Posted by: anderson.council on 19 November 2011

Live tracks from a 1973 European Tour abandoned live album are now available via MP3/FLAC download. So far only priced in US dollars although I don't think that will be an issue. I've had a listen to the 30 second tasters for each of the tracks and I'd have to say it sounds way better than Love you Live which came out a few years later. I think the period between '68 to 74 would be my favourite period of the band - which is a pity as I didn't get to see them (I was only 10 when these tracks were recorded) until they embarked on the Karaoke phase of their career in 1990.

Read all about it here - good tour pics and loads of detail at http://www.stonesarchive.com/

Correct Graeme. I should have mentioned that in the OP. BTW your url is a dead link.

I took a chance and bought it - and to my ears it's the best Stones live album by far - so worth every penny of my US$9.00.

Thought so.  If you like that try and get 'live in Leeds' which contains a mesmerising 'Midnight Rambler'.  G

Thanks for this. Brussels Affair and Live in Leeds are both superb and show how sloppy they were in concert later on. I have quite decent quality versions of both but I'll probably buy this as I expect it'll be more consistent than the one I have. Let's hope Live in Leeds appears too.

Has anybody tried downloading? I've just bought the FLAC version and can't get it to download with either Firefox or IE v8. I'm in work and we're very heavily firewalled etc but I've bypassed all that with no success.

Just curious if anybody has actually seen it working correctly.

Hi Tom,

Yeah I downloaded the FLAC tracks on Sunday with no problems. I've been using Chrome lately (I got bored with Firefox's increasing RAM grab) and IE9 for corpnet/work).

Hope you get it going - it really is good.

Thanks Scott. I'm not terribly bothered at the moment because I'm pretty sure it's something to do with security on the college network. I'll try at home tonight.

It worked ok from home, but only with IE. But it's worth any hassle as it's quite superb, by far their best live release. I wonder how many more gems are buried in the vaults. Let's hope Leeds 71 is next.

Good to hear Tom. And good to hear that someone else things the same as me that this is their best live release. As you say "what else is out there that we don't know about?"

For vinyl fans with money to burn this has now been released as a Triple 180g Vinyl with assorted coffee table books and the like from $750 to $1500 depending on how much ancilliary crap you can put up with. I'll pass.

I've got Checkerboard Lounge already? Sound is good and DVD excellent.  Chicago blues gets a bit turgid at times but their are some highlights.  G
