Unitiqute display track info twice

Posted by: Hugh Craig on 20 November 2011

Only had my Qute a few days and have been ripping madly to a ReadyNas Duo using XLD on my MacBook pro.  All is working well except the display on both the Qute and n-stream shows the track name twice - I'm guessing it should show the album title as well
I presume this is a tagging issue - can anyone help?
Btw - I am ripping to wav.
Thanks
Hugh

This usually happens when you have the same album in a number of locations which has been located by the server.

Sounds like a Tagging Problem - if you play the songs with iTunes on your Mac does it have the same issue?

You could also try displaying the tags in XLD to see if they are as you expect. XLD is compatible with my Vortexbox DNLA/UQ so I can't see any reason why it should not be fine with your ReadyNAS UPnP.

However, if iTunes gets it right then we know XLD is doing it properly and there must be something going on with the Tags getting on your NAS. The UQ will only display the names the NAS tells it to.

My hope is it is just your Tags then a little bit of editing should put this right.

I'm no expert but it might be a Mac OS metadata issue running up against the Windows XP OS in the Qute. Perhaps, someone with proper knowledge can explain further? But anyway, do you see any unexpected folders or files in the Music directory on your ReadyNas? Maybe a __macosx folder or similar? Thanks!

Thanks everyone.

I think I have the answer (though not the solution!)

I tried ripping a couple of CDs to FLAC and discovered that the metadata is fine and the display on both the Qute and n-Stream are correct. XLD doesn't appear to be able to embed to WAV

So, I can either:

Rip to FLAC with metada or

Rip to WAV without - unless anyone knows how to do this.

I need to do more careful listening to both WAV and FLAC to see if I can hear any difference.

I have also heard that FLAC is more prone to interruptions of signal, particularly over wifi (which mine is), because the signal has to be decoded as well as streamed.

Any thoughts?

see if I can hear any difference

They are the same - the PCM is 100% identical - every last bit.

I have also heard that FLAC is more prone to interruptions of signal,

Don;t believe all you hear - FLAC is more compact and will move more quickly between the NAS and UQ - the UQ has to extract the PCM from both WAV and FLAC. (Try downloading a FLAC and WAV of the same track from your NAS to your Mac and see which wins - bet it is the FLAC). However, the difference when streaming really doesn't matter at all.

I would use FLAC if were you (and I do) ... there is no difference in sound in my set-up probably because the music in FLAC, WAV, AIFF and ALAC is 100% identical. You need the processing power of a Sinclair ZX 81 to render any of them and the UQ has no problem.

If you have a congested network, which I bet you don't, then FLAC may sound marginally better, but I bet you can't hear it.

I know I'll be slaughtered for my views, but there is no difference between what storage devices you use in a NAS or anything like that .... the only factors you need to concern over are RFI and EMI. This is down to your physical connections. The file format format will not have any noticeable affect on this.

If the UQ could play AIFF then you could use that ,,,, sort of WAV with Tags.

However, I still say there is no difference between that and FLAC.

Thanks Guido, thats really helpful.

I use Kid3 on mac to check flac tags. I find that xld never produces an album artist tag, so I use kid3 to add that.

It does a similar job to mp3tag on pc.
