New discovery for me: Judas Priest
Posted by: The Hawk on 23 November 2011
I never really listened to this group before, and I'm listening to them on headphones as I compose this. Really quite musical, and I'm enjoying their 'sound' a lot. So much music to listen to, not enough time.
Dave
Dave,
You must be between Prog rock and a hard place
Loads better out there man.
But if they float your boat?.
Have fun..
Try Seconds Out by Genesis
it sounds great on Can's and SBLs
Your Rega and SBLs will love you, if you can find them a copy to play loud?
Four sides of one of the best.
Stu.
Or why not try one of the best live album ever ... well at least the best I've ever heard
Two years after they were recorded & after Chas & Dave had left EMI to start their own ‘Rockney’ records, EMI dusted off the tapes & released this album. It features the guitar playing of Albert Lee, and boy can he play. Of course, a lot of folk will scoff at the prospect of listening to a C&D album, but I bet they have never heard this and unfortunately will go through life without having heard the greatest live album in the modern CD catalogue (IMHO). Go for the expanded CD version to hear Albert is his full glory. Think Hendrix, Clapton, Garcia, Marvin were great guitar players? Well yes, they were, but Albert is even better: honestly.
This would be the only live album in my top 100, as I'm really more a studio recording person.
All the best, Guy
Yeah, I love Albert Lee, he's great. I'll check this out, thanks Guy!
And Stu, there's some pretty interesting moments with Judas Priest. Genesis is a group I need to explore more, for sure. Thanks!

Hi Dave
Did you know when the great late Sandy Denny left Fairport Convention to assemble the band Fotheringay with her husband Trevor Lucas that she recruited Albert Lee, but after 6 or so outings, she thought Albert a bit unhappy. His style of playing (picking) just didn't suit the traditional folk feel of Sandy's band. Albert said he was just playing what he was told and didn't have a feel for the music. Quite strange really as you'd think/hope combining my favourite singer/songwriter and favourite guitarist would be the ultimate, but apparently it wasn't. Perhaps you can have too much of a good thing.
All the best, Guy
Judas Priest?
4 words:
(LP) DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH
..Genesis are even worse - I am prone to some prog (King Crimson / Zappa / Rush) and solo Gabriel but have never seen the point in Genesis ...I find them (even by prog standards) far too widdley diddley (sorry for the technical terminology).
...So howzabout a hard rock alternative to the wretched Judas? ...how about some Budgie? Metallica are big fans!
> Albert Lee is akin to Richard Thompson I reckon
It was RT that recommend AL to Sandy saying he was the best guitarist he had ever heard.
Please don't underrate C&D LIve at Abbey Road, it is a truly stunning album.
Yes I do like C&D and the music hall tradition, but even those are not up for a bit of Rockney should be prepared to be amazed at just how good Albert is. Chas was in HH&F with Albert and what a great band they were.
Genesis without PG to me are like Fleetwood Mac without PG (or DK), just a Rumour (my vote for one of the blandest records ever made by a big name band and to think they recorded the marvellous Then Play On).
I'm not a JP fan, but I don't dislike them either, in fact quite like this
I prefer a bit of Iron Maiden though ........... (ducks for cover).
All the best and look after Connor Wickham, Guy
During my haphazardly-eclectic teenage road of fine musical discoveries i acquired a couple of Judas Priest albums for my record collection: British Steel & Killing Machine. It would seem now, with the benefit of hindsight, i was somewhat influenced by whomever I was spending the time with back those days.
But Judas Priest does have an amusing way of Theatrically Camping up the music [regardless to what they looked like] and thus, inject an entertaining amount of humour…
Can’t remember playing those Judas Priest albums while living at my parents house, and don’t think I played ‘em much in my own home in worrying about what the neighbours may think... doubt they’d clap along with the beat.
My JP albums now long since sold on but I still have my trusty old TDK tape copy that’s given me many an hour of pleasure in the car or sony walkman headphones… played it on the Nakamichi the other day and can confirm it sounds far better than the horrid CD remaster.

They're truly metal gods!Which album did you listen to?Their sound did change a lot in 30+ years,so if you dig a little deeper, there's a lot of surprises!Fi rst album's psychodelic hard rock, second a mix between Black sabbath and Queen!
I only ever bought 1 JP album - Unleashed In the East....?
Found it to be dire, so took it back to HMV immediately & convinced them to let me change it for something else....
Decided to stick to Led Zeppelin & Queen....!!
Great Priest albums: Musiclover already mentioned Defenders of the Faith. My favorite is Sad Wings of Destiny. Stained Class and Sin After Sin are wonderful too. Unleashed in the East is my favorite live album of theirs. Happy listening!
i'd strongly reccomend 'screaming for vengeance'.I think that's the best of their eighties albums.Defenders of the faith was never my cup of tea
