ND5XS and Squeezebox

Posted by: pixies on 26 November 2011

I am considering adding an ND5xs to my system (it would replace a squeezebox Transporter).  However I use other squeezebox devices around the house.  Would this cause any conflict?  All my music is stored as FLAC files on a PC and the squeezebox devices link into Logitechs Media Server software which is also on the PC.  In other words I would have the ND5XS in my main system but would still want to use my Squeezebox radio in the bedroom and the Duet in the kitchen.

Other option could be to add NDac to the Transporter, but thats another box to find a home for! The ND5XS will integrate well with my 155/Flatcap/152 and keep box count to 4.

I have SB's Touch and Duet on the same network as ND5XS, sharing the same music library and there is no problem at all.

I suppose there could be an issue if one of the devices takes your network close to the limit but there's no issues with this here.

Thanks Chris.  Looks like I should have no problems.

If you use a Vortexbox to house your library you can stream to both Squeezebox and UPnP.

Hi, you don't state it specifically, but you are aware that the squeezebox streamer will be different from the upnp streamer software.
In the pas I have had problems with squeezebox and upnp on the same network, especially with upnp clients. I think it's linked to the broadcast discovery messages.
Some trial and error may be required.
The solution could be if you had issues to create two separate subnets and route between them, but you would need a proper router and some network knowledge to setup so this approach might not be viable.

The latest version of the SqueezeServer (renamed "Logitech Media Server") is said to work as a UPnP server - plenty of postings on the bulletin boards saying it doesn't work properly. I haven't tried it myself but there seems to be a possibility that it could be used for both SB and Naim media players. I  use JRiver and haven't discovered any conflict yet.

I am already using the Logitech Media Server successfully with both Squeezebox players and NDX. The NDX is able able to see and play the playlists created by iPeng. Its great.

Not quite....  The new server software allows the SB devices to be seen as a UPNP Renderer to any UPNP Servers you may have on the network.

It works fine with J River Media Center.  It shows up as a DLNA zone.

FYI, local control of the Squeezebox in this scenario is limited to "Pause".

@chris, interesting thread. Excuses for this site-step, but is there tonyour opinion a lot of SOund quaility difference between the SQ Touch and the ND5xs ? More specific, if you use the digital out from the Sq Touch into the NDP5, versus using the NDP5 stand alone. Reason for asking is that I am doubting how to spend my current 3k upgrade budget. Either on a nDac (fed by my sq touch) or a NDP5 (replacing my SQ Touch and Nort Star Essensio dac).  Cheers, Iver

Hi Iver

My recent experience with digital upgrades.

I had a Squeezbox Touch using a Teddy Pardo TTouch PSU with Klaus v3 software mods into a Lavry DA10 DAC. Few months ago I purchased an nDaC, this was a big improvement over the Lavry.

Last Saturday I purchased a mint ex-demo UnitiQute for £995. All I use the UQ for is the digital output as I already have a 152xs/155xs/flatcap.

This raised the bar even further, I was sceptical that 1s and 0s were just 1s and 0s and there’s no difference between streamers, I WAS WRONG

Hope this helps

Sean

Hi Sean, thanks for your fedback !! I am considering a similar path: purchase the nDac first and add a NDP5 or UQ later. Your feedback makes me thibk of buying the UQ instead of the NDP5 especially since I will use it as streamer only. Again thanks !
