Looking for a recommendation for a NAS Box

Posted by: Jeff888 on 27 November 2011

Would appreciate any recommendations for a new NAS server to compliment my HDX.

Im looking to see if I can sync my itunes folders sitting on my main Windows 7 PC  automatically so that the HDX can see any new songs added automatically. Thanks in advance.

Get a NAS with a DAAP server then syncing is not an issue just use itunes to rip to nas and the nas will sevre out to all itunes and the UPNP server can also use said rips.

QNAP does this fine, do a search on the forum as there are a lot of posts for recommended nases.

Bon matin, Western Digital My Bookworld Edition 1To. Very quiet, stand-by mode, Upnp and DNLA, Twonky Media server included.

I use it with Imac, Playstation 3 et Naim Uniti.

Love it.

I think your HDX will need to do some index of the files, but it doesn't care where your music is located so any decent NAS like the QNAP Gary recommends will work fine. T

he HDX just needs to see the share on the NAS.

Again, as Gary says, you will need to rip with iTunes though as I think when the HDX rips it likes to keep the share it plonks its files under its control. However, it will happily read music files in shares ripped by other means.

Guido,

I am planning to set up an HDX with a NAS as Jeff did. However, you are suggesting that ripping should be done through iTunes. Isn't it bypassing the need for an HDX? Wouldn't the quality be lower?

Hello Michael

Yes - I agree.

The following document from Naim shows you how to let the HDX access your iTunes library, but I've not seen one that explains how to do it the other way around.

http://www.naimaudio.com/userf...pplement_issue_1.pdf

I'm not 100% sure, but everything I've read about the Naim ripping engine suggests it likes to be 100% in control of the files and file store.  Moreover, when you rip with iTunes or a program like XLD which updates iTunes then the library files and so forth are kept in sync; I don't think the Naim ripper could do this.

So this would need investigating, but if you intend to use iTunes for playing some of the time then I'd make sure it can play a share created by the HDX.

I would like somebody else to comment on this though in case there is something I've misunderstood. There may be a forum member who uses such as set up without problem.

However, although I don't think there is anything magical about Naim rips, I agree with you if I had a HDX then I'd want to use it to rip CDs, but you could make bit-perfect rips with a Mac and use your HDX to play them. In my opinion, you would do better to get the NDX or ND5XS if the sharing between Naim and non-Naim players is important.

All the best, Guy

Thank you for the info Guido.

Actually, this question of bit perfect ripping has always left me wondering what might be the magic behind the HDX that allow it to surpass what my Mac can do. Actually, my second system is a UnitiQute that will be connected via an ethernet network. So sharing between different systems is not a problem. Nevertheless, the NDX or ND5XS are probably serious options for my system which currently consists of a CDX2/XPS/282/HC/250+MD100 FM Tuner. That's why I am following closely the forum. The move is several month ahead, though.

Best,
