Uniti upgrade?

Posted by: GTE on 28 November 2011

Anyone else hoping that Naim will upgrade the Uniti to incorporate the 80 watt amp in the Superuniti or are there other limitations to this, such as the case size or temperature dissipation? Having gone to the Uniti from a 3 piece ADS Atelier system, I prefer the compactness of the single (superb!) piece.

Naim has never done this kind of upgrade. Uniti is as it is. If amp is not enough for your need, you can add an external one. Or go with a Superuniti and rip all your CDs.

Thanks, Manu. I had meant incorporating the 80 watt amp into future production of the Uniti - not a retrofit of existing units.

Manu, can you say how the Uniti would compare with the Superuniti in SQ if both had a NAP200/250.2 attached? I realise the Uniti won't have been upgraded to 24/192 yet, so that makes the comparison in this respect impossible, but I'd be happy to hear any conjectures. Thanks!

Uniti is at the Nait5i level, SuperUniti is at the NAP200 level regarding amplification....

No Naim recommend nap 250.2 as an upgrade for SU.

The Uniti should use the nap 200.

Nothing wrong with 250-2/Uniti combination. Serious bass and more definition. Stick a V8 on your little VW beetle.

When I said ''amplification level'' I included the preamp section.  A Uniti with a 250 power amp will still have a Nait 5i preamp... But I have experienced a Qute with a 250-2 and it was impressive...

With this kind of combos, you should spend time at your best dealer to try different combinaisons. And more now with SuperUniti and ND5XS.

I bevieve I would prefer a SuperUniti more than a Uniti + 250; the first one will sound more coherent and more precise, even if the second one may sound more impressive at first. You really have to try it seriously.

My last try ND5XS and Nait XS and my answer is a big YES, this is a fantastic combo, add a power supply and...

One dealer I contacted recommended the Uniti/NAP250.2 combination. I thought it would be better than a bare SuperUniti. If both had a 250.2 then the SU would of course be ahead but not by much. But I'm only speculating, and going on what I have been told: no demos possible, alas, where I am. Thanks!

Would the Superuniti, paired with a Unitiserve to play (as well as eventually rip and stream) my CD collection be considered a logical and more future-proof upgrade from my Uniti?

I have a UnitiQute with a 250.2 driving a pair of Dynaudio Contour S1.4. It's a MINI with an Aston-Martin V12.

What's your aim Nagoya? There is always something better. If you don't use CDs, the SU seems like the best deal in town. According to more than one dealer here the pre section of the SU is equal to and possibly slightly more dynamic than that of the SN. The power amp is similar, if not the same than that of the SN and close to a 200. The DAC inside the SU sits between NDX and ND5XS, while the DAC in the SN is closer to 5i level. The SU seems like stunning VFM any way you look at it... Plus you can't upgrade it other than with a NAP, which seems to make little sense, so the buck stops here!

I'd go with a Qute/500 instead

Hello Manu,

Since I'm already out Superunit 'shopping', I was looking forward to your input re my earlier post:

Would the Superuniti, paired with a Unitiserve to play (as well as eventually rip and stream) my CD collection be considered a logical and more future-proof upgrade from my Uniti?

Thanks!

GTE,

Your Uniti has the same features as the SuperUniti, or at least will be upgradable to offer the same features. The SuperUniti is a better sounding unit, that's all (but a big one...). So the issue is not future proofing, but sound qualiy. If you want bette music, the Superuniti is one way to go.

As for UnitiServe, this is a matter of convenience and safety. Of course you can do good things with a computer, but you have to do it right and it is not that easy...and not free at all. Serve does it great and easy: it always works, no worry about chosing software, no need to reboot from time to time....

I sincerely doubt the truth in either of those statements.  Not only from your personal experience but also regarding almost anything electronic.

Thanks very much for your input, Manu. Likely the route I'll take.

TP, my aim was to add a power amp to my Uniti because I'm not really happy with the sound. I had been considering the NAP250.2. But this needs to run at 100v, and getting it converted is an additional expense and far from straight forward. Anyway, at a later point, I'd like to move the Uniti on and get a Naim streamer, and add a pre-amp too. But if the SU is as good as some say, then perhaps I should go for that instead... I use the CD on my Uniti - the SQ is better - but I can certainly do without it. Thanks!

I am in a similar position and will probably go for  a Superuniti rather than add a power amp - see the current thread in Hifi Corner. However I find I much prefer the sound of streamed music to the Uniti's CD player. I think one of the main reasons the SU is so much better than the Uniti is that you are not paying for a CD player. I'll be so glad to stop using it - I hate pucks! The only CD drive I'll ever need now is in my PC!

I run my Uniti with nap 200 and a pair of Ovator 400, well I'm really satisfied and I think I reached what i need in terms of bass and clearness. Of course there will be more to add but believe me after three month I still have a great sensation when i switch them on. My room is also quite large 10 mt x 5mt, but even with 45/55 knob you can still have a conv in the opposite side of the room (wife and friends) without any sense of "loud" music in the ambient
