Best UPnP server

Posted by: Augusto Giusti on 30 November 2011

Dear all

My gear: Unitiqute, mac mini, nDac and ipad2

I'm thinking to leave a blind mac mini running something streaming to the qute.

Twonky, playback or asset??

I just want to have the full cover art resolution on the iPad2. Most of media servers like minidlna downsize the folders.jpg to 160x160. I don't want that

Thanks, Augusto

can you run windows on the mini?  if not I am sure Tog will be along soon.  This will entail you dedicating a computer to his idea.  Why not buy a cheap miniPC running XP.  then you can run any number of servers.

Option C - A NAS with a UPNP server running "on it".  Not sure how that works though.

No need to complicate things. Playback works perfectly.

James pointed Playback to me. It works just fine.

Thanks! With Playback can I get full resolution cover art?

Yep

Playback works very nicely. But be carefull with some antivirus/firewall software like VirusBarrier, they interfere with covert art transmission.

Hi, Twonky long in tooth, and has only marginal support for WAV files. Asset running on a tiny WHS box is hard to beat. It also transcodes for specific upnp clients, so supports your mp3 network player in the kitchen as well as your Naim....

You might want to try the squeezebox server. Just works on Windows. ND5XS seems to find it just fine.

Thanks a lot

Hi MangoMonkey

Can you clarify the point about using squeezebox server with the ND5xs?  I use squeezebox products around the house and squeezebox server to stream my FLAC files to them. I am just about to demo the ND5xs.  I had assumed that I needed a separate UPnP server i.e. like Asset or Tversity in order to play my music.  Can I just connect to squeezebox server?

Well, the naim dealer plugged the ns5xs into my network and it automatically found both the squeezeboxserver and a windows media player upnp server. So no setup required, at least for gge demp

OK thanks.  I have collected the ND5XS so will plug it in later today and see how things go.

Rich46.

Sold the Naim CDX/XPS last year!  Have embraced streaming ever since and now demoing the ND5XS against my Logitech Transporter.

As of release 7 Squeezebox Server has been renamed Logitech Media Server (LMS), and is a decent UPnP server - it will serve pictures and video as well as music if you're that way inclined. Not only that, but a Logitech Touch can now be used as a UPnP renderer, so you could use a Touch for a second or third player if you had an NDX as your main player, and nothing stopping you using other control points like Kinsky either.

Looks like I need to update to latest squeezebox server release!  ND5XS installed and sounding great.  Just have a slight problem with n-stream app which is not finding the player.  I guess I should start a new post for this problem?
