internet music service recommendations for young person?

My daughter (aged 19) is complaining she misses Limewire so much! She was able to find any music there, but similar file sharing sites do not have such an extensive offer etc. I don't exactly understand what she's talking about as I have no experience with such sites. You know, at this age, you try out millions of music and keep on listening only a few; so it's not feasible to purchase every music. I am thinking of giving her a UQute as a gift. Which internet sites could I direct her to for listening to and downloading music? (She wants to be able to download to her iPhone for listening.) Any recommendations for sites (or device)?

RCRD LBL is a good place to start.  Free mp3s and an app for the iPhone that works really well.

I've also found 7digital to be good too. They often give away free mp3s.  Both of these sites are ideal for expanding your musical knowledge.

Don't forget iTunes!

Spotify is a good place for free listening and contains about 80% of many music genres. Limewire was a  file-sharing site containing illegal downloads (and many virus's) like Napster many years ago. Most of it's users have probably migrated to Bit Torrent sharing or Usegroups but both again contain unprotected copied mp3s and Flacs, and are probably not best discussed here.

Have her search for the music using Google.  Type the song title or artist, followed by ", torrent" to get a listing of potential download sites.  She'll need to install MicroTorrent to use these sites.  Please understand that the legality of this is iffy but, as you say, downloading songs and listening to them before buying the music legally is almost essential these days.

How about Pandora or LastFM?

http://audiomap.tuneglue.net/

a great source for finding "similar artists"

Go to preferences and bump up Nodes to 11.

Then type an artist.

Right Click - Lock Position

Then Right click expand.

Then you can lock position and expand others.

There are plenty of tracks and albums on bandcamp. Some are free, others you have to pay for, and sometimes you can pay whatever you like. Thanks!

With all due respect to your daughter, it's about time she started paying for music instead of sourcing it for free. Sounds harsh? Maybe.

If you can afford to buy her a Uniqute as a gift then how about also throwing in some credit on i-tunes or Amazon for her as well.

BTW, I have teenage 16 year old twins so I know what I'm say here in that teens paying for music is still done these days.

James L has a point and I second AndrewH13's suggestion for Spotify. Its Premium service will allow syncing the music to her iPhone and it costs less than a CD per month - almost no reason not to use it. In fact, if she's got a good mobile data plan there is an iPhone client for Spotify that will give her direct (streaming) access.

Spotify a brilliant service with many extra features and more coming.
