'Client Adaptation' in Twonky Server - No Naim Options

Posted by: spacehopper on 10 December 2011

Hi

Since joing the forum a few weeks ago, I have now picked up my ND5 XS which, as my first Naim source, has really impressed me!  Previously I was using a Rega DAC with vortexbox which was a hard act to follow, but now it's got to be Naim

Setting up the UPnP had been a challenge, though I have settled on Twonky Server on QNAP, which seems a popular choice from reading other forums.

Anyway I have noticed within the Twonky configuration (on pc until my QNAP arrives) a page dedicated to 'Media Recievers', which lists the IP addresses of the various devices presumably showing to the server.  Of course one of these is the ND5 and alongside it is a pull down menu of maybe 100 different UPnP devices which, if selected, allows some kind of 'Client Adaptation' to occur.

Can anybody explain what exactly this might involve and what the benfits might be if any?

Unfortunately there are no Naim options (at this stage!) within the list, but I have found that if you select 'Bubble DS Control Point' you get high resolution album art within n-steam, whereas if you allow Twonky to select 'Generic' you get a very low res, blurry image.

Cheers.

I use twonky and have never really played with these settings and left them as default. I will try the bubble ds control to see if it improves the album art. Thanks for the tip.

Did you have difficulty connecting the Vortexbox to the ND5?  Just curious why you switched, as my plan is to eventually use a Vortexbox as a UPnP server for an ND5.

Hi Steven, hope this makes a difference for you.  This is using Twonky server version 6.0.37.  Would be interested to hear how you get on!

@mutterback Vortexbox is superb in my opinion, but a NAS suits my needs better in that I need a backup solution as well as UPnP.  I was running Vortexbox on an old converted laptop, conected via a usb-s/pdif converter.  It sounded much better than any of the media players I tried on a vista laptop.  I can't see you having any problems.

Cheers.
