WHERE IN LONDON . . .

Posted by: andrea on 12 December 2011

 . . . to find a cheap s/h amp? Around 100/120 quids or so.

Hallo fellows, I've been away for a while.

Going to London for xstmas, my daughter is living there for a while, I'd like buy her a cheap but good integrated amp, s/h.

She will be mainly listening mp3 I believe.

It is still BBC radio a great broadcaster of music? A tuner could be suitable as well.

Any advise on brand/type would be welcome.

I've not been to London for a long time, since '95, it has changed hugely I've heard.

Once upon the time it was a great place for shopping all kind of hi-fi equip, but now?

Would be better the bay?

Beside that, an advise for vinyl/dvd/cd shopping would be welcome.

Many thanks to the willing contributor, and to the silent reader as well

As you say Andrea, maybe not so many outlets , but Edgware Road still has many shops, selling computers, cameras and hifi.

Check out Richer sounds also.

Maybe a S/N Creek tuner, I have one, a good sound on a good aerial. Not sure where you would shop for s/h , the obvious high end dealers ,but of course that comes at a price. There are many exchange/pawn shops about but of course no telling what stock they might have.

Andrea,

Think about getting a receiver.  It doesn't sound like your daughter needs "specialist" hi-fi separates so something like a receiver would fit the bill wouldn't it?

Richer Sounds has a Teac Receiver for £129.95.  Wouldn't that be all she needed?

Cheers

Jim

Hi Stu, nice to see (!?!?) you!!!

It is going to be fast, we'll leave on december 23, and be there on 24, going by car (oh my!).

By the way, any hint about need of reservation on ferry or tunnel?

We'll leave back on 28, and stop by in Paris for new year's eve, with other two boys . . .

Guess what we're carry with us?

cheers

Hi Jim, yes indeed, a good receiver could be a good buying, right.

I'llhave to go to that RS you say, and brand is a guarantee.

Many thanks

Kind regards

High street shopping has been decimated since you were last here. I must say that I have done little to prevent this. As a one-stop shop, I guess the surviving HMV in Oxford St (the cheaper end, east of Oxford Circus, part of the street) is the only big store selling all the above.

Berwick St still has some independents (Sister Ray/Reckless(?), but I would suggest using internet search engines if you are interested in particular musical genres to see who's still about.

Hi Big Al, I see . . . . . London is not exception from what has happened elsewhere . . . off course.

Sorry to hear that, but, that’s the way it goes I guess . . .

Sure enough I know many good web sites for music shopping, but the taste of going through mountains of crispy vinyl records, handling them, sorting them out and bringing them home with you . . . .

Well all we have to get old sooner or later. . .

Many thanks for hints, and cheers

Andrea,

I would book the tunnel asap if i was you.

Its a busy time of year.

Dont use the ferry, to slow and you dont know what the weather is going to do.

Also you exit and go onto the tunnel 10 mins up the road from me so you can pop in for a coffee.

I will give you a call.
