Ubuntu machine slow on Web.

Posted by: BigH47 on 13 December 2011

My spare PC ,a Medion pc , is  taking ages, minutes even to download web pages.

I used this as an opportune time to update to 11.10 from 10.4DTS, nice OS but the slow page loading still exists.

Games and general moving about the computer is fine, just the web,  signal strength is as it was.

I'm thinking maybe, memory full or lack of free space on H/D, my problem is actually viewing these things.

OS shows extra internal drive and cd/dvd drives but I can't seem to view H/D or get memory usage.

Any ideas please?

TIA

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the default Unity 3 D is a performance killer for old machines. It is a Windows Vista equivalence, a disaster! If you can, use Unity 2 D instead.

Reality I wouldn't know a "Unity" desktop from a poke in the eye.

A series of tiles down the LHS of screen, dialogue box shoots out sideways, if you click "-" the box slips back into it's tile. It seems OK to me.

I basically just use the machine for playing solitaire and a little web browsing, I only started with Ubuntu as I was told it had a smaller footprint, my Win XP was filling the drive up and barely working, I had also just bought an iMac so saying good bye to MS was no hardship.

Log out, select Unity 2D and log back in. It is just a gear symbol on the top right of the box where you enter your name.
