Any idea when hard drive prices will drop again?

I really need a NAS but have been put off by the current high costs.  I'm looking at a Synology 2-bay unit, a DS 212j, with two 2 tb WD enterprise drives, but that is looking like close to $900 right now.

I've got a kludgy network backup solution in place for my uServe (using my Macbook and an external usb drive) so this is really for music files.  Thus, I'm not in a HUGE hurry.

I've been looking at Seagate Constellation enterprise drives (similar to those in the HDX) which were about $100 for 1TB here in the US last year.  They're over $200 now (if you can find them).  Be patient.

Actually the flooding in Thailand crucified HDD production. Virtually all the drive manufacturers have fabs situated there and lost their backend read/write head process capability. Fabs were flooded to a depth of 2 - 3 feet.which ruined a lot of specialised equipment. Expect it to take a year for them to get close to normal capacity.

A shame these manufacturers didn't have a backup plan?

I work in the industry and am being told anywhere between the end of Q1 2012 and end of H1 2012 - that is into large industrial partners so I would expect it to take a bit longer into consumers.
