Hey Guys,

If you look at below link, you will find a translated review from a Dutch dealer comparing ND5XS/XP5XS vs NDX. Of course it is a review and basically says nothing untill you try and audit yourself. I am a happy owner of a ND5XS hoping to extend it this summer with a XP5XS.

Cheers,

Ragman -

Those last two replies should have had smileys...

BS = Bull Sh*t.  In polite company, bull "crap" may be slightly more appropriate.  Or, if you are visiting the UK, "bollocks" is a good substitute.  They are all rough slang for "nonsense".

ATB.

+1 to what Hook said.

Here's the smiley.

A little while ago Andrew Everard tested the ND5 gramophone magazine, adding the XP5, he found the sound quality exceeded the NDX, as was expected bearing in mind the combination was more expensive (by £500).  He the added the XP5 to the NDX, and implied that that was a whole new ball game - make of that what you will.

In germany you have to pay (list prices) 2598€ ND5 XS and 2148 € XP5 xs and for the NDX 4198€.

As you mentioned the difference is approx. 550€.

Or + 15%.

If you buy the NDX and the XP5 XS your are  ~6400€. A lot of more money when the ~4750€ as the ND5 XS plus XP5 XS.

With ND5 XS plus XP5 XS you have the option to update later.

Same as you have in case of the NDX without PS.

At the End you can get for 550€ something "better"!

But two instead of one box....

The best way to decide is listen........

Guys,

Forget the math. You need to see what sounds better in your system to your ears.

I for one, was very happy with the bare ND5XS and like it better than the NDX. If it were not for the box count, you can do ND5XS, nDac, XP5XS and be way ahead of the NDX/XP5XS.

Here's one more idea to consider. Get the Naim Dac, and hook it up to a s/h 1st generation UnitiQute, adding a PSU to the Naim Dac as appropriate - do the math...

MangoMonkey, exactly what maths are you referring to ??????

"Forget the math. You need to see what sounds better in your system to your ears."

This is what I mean by that:

What's the point of all these numbers if the end result is something you don't enjoy?

Do the math:

From Urban Dictionary

http://www.urbandictionary.com...term=do%20the%20math

It loosely means: "it's pretty obvious"

- or - "ist doch klar"

"Here's one more idea to consider. Get the Naim Dac, and hook it up to a s/h 1st generation UnitiQute, adding a PSU to the Naim Dac as appropriate - do the math..."

Doing UnitiQute into a Naim dac might actually be the cheapest option, and by far the best...

What MM is trying to imply is what comes after the DAC is far more important than using fancy digital front end.

There are few folks here using Mac Mini -> nDAC/555PS to great result and even out-performed NDX/555PS.

Ahh lost something in the transatlantic translation.. I would have said you don't have to do hard sums to work out what best sounds to you...

http://english.stackexchange.c...-does-hard-sums-mean

But thanks for the explanation, as I thought you were looking at specifications etc hence the confusion on what you were referring to.

Simon

Edit: but you could also say "don't be guided by hard dollars alone,  buy what what sounds best for you"... So paradoxically it's far from clear gauging subjectivity from price alone  .. When you do the maths... Anyway I digress.
