Capability of NDX / ND5XS

Posted by: pz on 27 December 2011

Hi Mates,

I wonder if these players could recognise HDD via their ethernet (LAN) and/or USB ports.

Could they playback music files connected a HDD locally by these input ports ?

In general, what is the best HDD music player in your experience to feed naim dac ?

Any posts welcomed.

Hi, the ND players are network players and via the Ethernet they can play UPNP or web radio. Therefore you will need a program to act as upnp server to Mae the HDD playable by the network player over the Ethernet. I find a microsoft OS program called Asset works very well with Naim.
Alternatively you can use a memory stick and play these. Nstream allows you to navigate the content on the memory stick.

Dear Simon,

Thx for your post.

It also means that there is no need to buy ND machines if you

want to playback USB sticks contents ?

Do I understand things well when I suppose I could navigate the content

of USB stick by Nstream directly on DAC as well ?

Best regards.

Yep, however I prefer the convenience of navigable USB playback on the NDX compared to the nDAC. Having said that I only use USB for test tones etc

Dear Simon,

Simon"

Please be so kind to explain me step by step what to do to reach the above quoted target:

(Please come down to my level...)

The facts:

I have a DAC and an USB stick inserted to the black panel of the DAC to play music.

I have also an Ipod Touch.

From now on what should I do.....to be able to navigate within the music tracks stored on the USB

stick connected to DAC ?

No.

When you say DAC, do you mean the NaimDAC?

'cause the post title is refering to ND5XS NDX.

You can't navigate with NStream on a UBS connected to the NaimDac

You can on NDX or ND5XS.

Thanks for all the replies Mates.

Now I think things are understood:

There is no way to navigate within tracks if

USB sticks are  connected to stand alone naim

DAC.

You could do this when USB stick is used

on ND machines. Right ?

A new Mac Mini is pretty good - is it the best, don't know ... I like it though. I think your investment is better after the Naim DAC + 555PS than before it.

Mac Mini into Naim DAC + 555PS/282-SC/200 is a better option in my opinion than

£10,000 SuperStreamer into Naim DAC + Nait 5i

I doubt you'll find a transport better than an inexpensive USB stick with hi-res music, but it is a pain to use. Always use the rear port on the Naim DAC for your sticks.

Dear Guido,

Thx for your post.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Apple

computers. I have a healty amount of FLAC

music files stored on PC.

What software could be used on MAC Mini

to playback Flac files ?

How do you connect your Mini to the DAC ?

With what cable ?

Regards,
