DVD 5 - DAC - Question about digital out

Posted by: christoph on 01 January 2012

Hi, I use my new dvd 5 with the ndac. i use pcm stereo for the pre selection of the audio track of the dvd and multichannel for the digital out of the player. Is that right or should i use stereo for the digital out? (I read in the manual that this option is a stereo downmix). Is it better to use the ndac or to use the da-converter in the dvd 5? Does anybody compared this two options?

Happy new year, christoph

I would think that using PCM stereo as the sound choice when it is available on the disc and the stereo down mix setting when no stereo mix is available on the disc would be the best settings.

I had my A/V receiver fail and go for repair recently so streamed from my BD player using the digital out into a non-naim DAC and onwards to my Naim pre amp. I compared it with the stereo analog out on the BR player and concluded ( with repetitive comparisons) that digital out into a dedicated DAC was superior.

Of course it has to be a PCM signal. You will get a horrendous noise if you try to do that with a Dolby stereo signal.

Christoph,

If you are using coax remember the advice is to use output 1 for better sound quality.

If you use it just as a transport turn of the video circuits for enhanced output.

I have made a point of buying as many PCM-DVDs as I could, CD quality soundtrack with video.
