Idiots guide into (Naim) streaming

Posted by: Lightkeeper on 04 January 2012

Hi,

I am reading ND5 XS manual and it is fair, but a bit generic. May I kindly ask Naim or some forum member to write a cookbook style manual what is needed to setup and how (UPnP, router, PC...can I continue to use my PC normally after I made UPnP of it, can I make only one HDD to be UPnP...) to make it possible to stream music with Naim streamers from our PCs, Notebooks, NAS (can I use ordinary NAS with network support as a direct storage for streaming anyway?) and so on?

I already see where all this going and it seems that streaming would have a bright future, so I would appreciate some down to earth explanation and guide for us which suddenly coming from vinyl.

Thank you and all the best,

Oz.

Oz

I can't give you a link here because they are non-Naim but there are some informative and general documents which could be useful reading as a starting point for you.

Maybe you could e-mail me at  geoff_phillipps at hotmail dot com

Geoff, if you check the forum rules, it's only links to commercial sites and other bullet in board forums that are not allowed. Links to wikis and igeneral info is allowed and as you see is quite often used for the benefit of forum members and Naim's customers.

I sent Oz off to the Linn Docs folder on Wiki. A lot of what is published there is generic and useful info BUT a bit sensitive as a link here I would have thought.

Btw I suspected I knew Oz and wanted to re-establish contact so 2 birds with one stone

It would be worth doing a google search on Vortexbox; this is a first class music server with superb UPnP support as well as supporting Logitech, Sonos and Apple in to the bargain ... oh and it's free (you just need to have some hardware or buy it pre-installed on an appliance). Nice thing is you can try it on an old PC and get used to UPnP and so on for free and then if you like it buy more substantial hardware.

I like it as it is almost Apple like in that just works and it is 100% Microsoft free, two of my basic requirements in life (not a lot to ask).

There are lots of solutions and I still believe there is very little to choose between them. I don't believe you could build a better music server than a Vortexbox for your Naim kit, but you could build one that worked as well such as the Naim UnitiServe (which, of course, has Naim support).

Anyway, the VB documentation and forum give a good into in to the world of streaming muzak.

The basic question asked by the OP needs a decent answer though. In general terms the hifi industry, overkeen to promote streaming as the successor to CD, has totally failed to provide adequate communication to the army of potential, non-IT-geek customers out there who simply want to know what boxes and wires to buy from Maplins and what to do if their expensive Naim box comes up with a strange message.

Instead of publishing White Papers promoting the mathematical geniuses at work in their digital software department, Naim could more usefully publish a booklet with all relevant facts and ideas in it. May be contentious to some, but it has to be better than what is currently available. Meantime, there will continue to be potential customers who won't bother with the hassle.

Now I must continue trying to get my ND5XS to deliver streamed CDs....

In the absence of any info on network configurations and options for audio streaming from Naim you might enjoy reading the Linn Docs as I suggested earlier. ( just do a search on Linn Docs)

As a new Superuniti owner, it sure is a steep learning curve. I have found the Superuniti itself to be very intuitive and have an easy to master user interface. Naim's guide is also transparent.

It's at the other end of things, i.e.ripping, tagging, artwork and serving, that the complications lie. Unfortunately, I couln't afford the Unitiserve AND the Superuniti, so I've chosen the Vortexbox route and am starting at groiund level.
