Decca Sound Classical Box Set

Posted by: mrclick on 09 January 2012

Having recently been helped out on the Chailly Beethoven thread I thought I would bring this lovely box set to your attention.

As a classical newbie this has been a godsend. It has 50 CDs at around £75, and a brilliant introduction to a range of composers and music which is new to me. What strikes me as particularly good is the confidence you get with the performances, and the sound quality. It is superb. The set comes with a really good booklet which also describes the history of Decca recording.

I reckon it could be a winner even for some of you classical diehards out there. And to help, I have listed all the composers/conductors below. A bit greedy on space, so forgive me - especially those on ipads - but none of the shops properly list what is there.

Regards

David

This looks like a lot of fun. Some brilliant performances here. The actual layout of the CDs follows the originals, don't they? One of the discs in this collection is one of the very few recitals ever conducted by Georg Solti. He felt Renée Fleming was that good, and it truly shows on that disc, a real treasure and excellent start to opera.

Cheers,

mrclick,

Yes, this is a nice set to own for anyone.  I already had a selection of some of the discs but the value for me is it is introducing a subset of music / composers that are strangely not represented in my library after 40 years of collecting music.  In particular, I have next to zero of anything by British composers and so this gives me a nice leap forward.

All the performances I've heard so far are very good as is the sound quality, in general.  I liked it enough to spring for the very tiny vinyl offering, in comparison.

Very nice.  And an amazing value.  How does it sound compared to the individually packaged releases?

I know RCA Living Stereo has done a box.

Has Mercury done a box of the Wilma Cozart Fine recordings??

There is a Mercury Living Presence 50 cd box set which will be shipping at the end of January. I ordered mine from Amazon UK (instead of US) as it was half price. Look it up (as I can't post a link due to forum rules).

I have found them all now.   Does anybody have an opinion on the sound?  Somehow a box of 50 CD's of the best sounding classical recordings ever for only $2-3 eachwith great sound included seems too good to be true.

It may be good, but it is true - great sound is included. These recordings are expert CD transfers.

Florestan agrees as above and there are lots of good reviews elsewhere also.  And as EJS says, you get the original cover art on each CD.

If you like the titles, you can be confident with the quality.

The box lid even has a magnet to keep it tight shut. Nice little touch.
