Nas with UPnP for SuperUniti...?

Posted by: deanyoungson on 09 January 2012

HI All,

I am new to streaming and new Naim.

I recently purchased a Naim SuperUniti and WD My Book Live Nas.  For the last few days of setting up I have had nothing but issues with the NAS concerning album artowrk and track listings...

I have discovered that this is down to the Twonky server within the NAS and even though the problems are minor have decided to return the WD NAS and purchase a new NAS which will not have the same issues (hopefully).

I know this has been asked a 1001 times times but can you guys let me know what NAS devices with UPnP built in you are using without problems regarding album artwork and track listings.

Im completely lost as to which NAS to buy, as I have said I am a novice and not that technical when it comes to this, I would like a NAS that I could simply plug in, transfer my iTubes folder across to which then streams effortlessly - does such a product exist?

I am currently considering the Buffalo Linkstation Pro - can anybody advise about this NAS?

Sorry to be such a pain...

Thanks

Dean

To be honest Dean, since you already have your collection ripped via iTunes then i would be tempted to keep this but you need to free up your Mac Book. So...

Put your iTunes library on to your NAS - purely as storage.

Get yourself a Mac mini - the Mk1 is fine - you can find plenty S/H.

Run it Headless. All you need to do then is once setup, VNC or screenshare into it from your Mac Book to control it.

Run iTunes on it and Playback or Majestic as the UPnP server.

This gives you -

A decent music server that works with your existing iTunes library. No need to re-rip, maintain two libraries across different platforms

An easy to control Mac to run the server and do your ripping.

You can share your iTunes library to other Macs in the household.

You can manage your iPods / iPhones etc from this iTunes library.

This is the way i do it. I had a spare Mac Mini and found my NAS wasnt too good on the serving front (running Twonky). I needed to be able to load music onto various iPods and iPhones and didnt want to maintain two seperate libraries. I have the NAS and Mini using the power management functions to power off overnight and then power on the next day before i get home from work, automatically mount the NAS drive etc so i can just get my iPad out, and hit play when i'm ready to listen. Works very well

I also use WD MybookLive for UPnPP straming to Uniti. Initially I had problems with it until I gave it the fixed IP address on my router.  From then on it has been a breeze.  It streams my entire iTunes library as well as my Flacs and Wavs folders.  I simply use the Uniti remote for selection.

But I do no understand the bit about the artwork.  All I see on Uniti display is the text, song name, artist, album etc. no graphics.  I hope you do not stream from NAS to Mac or PC then on to Superuniti?

And I use wired ethenet connection between my Uniti and NAS.

Note the fixed IP for NAS is vey important bit and it seems to fix many related issues.

Computer idiot's question coming up, look away now.

CD ripping on a RIPNAS obviously takes care of itself; can you copy music files from PC/laptop onto one of these RIPNAS (including Unitiserve)?

re Ripnas: yes, it's drag and drop. Unfortunately, this not possible with the US. adca

None of these things are perfect, but I'm getting on pretty well with a 2 TB Vortexbox ripper/NAS (bought from a reliable guy who builds them and sells on a certain auction site) and my Superuniti. It only cost 269.99. It doesn't have a digital out, but I don't need that - I just have a wired network connection to the router.

And yes you can copy files you ripped on any computer on to the Vortexbox.
