Are Naim rips readable using non-Naim streamers?

Simple question.  I note various posts talkinig about how Naim rips store the metadata/cover art.  My (possibly incorrect) impression is that Naim does it in a different way from e.g dBPoweramp. Does that mean that if you rip a CD using e.g. Unitiserve, then you couldn't use that rip with a non-Naim streamer?

Thanks Simon for such a lucid and eloquent explanation.

This is precisely the concern that has stopped me buying a Unitiqute.  I have decided to go down the route of buying a Synology NAS (the 212+) with a couple of Enterprise standard disk drives + a new mac mini.

If Naim made the metadata more readable/compatible/accessible for those of us with many Apple devices, then a UQ would be my preferred and default choice.

I've bought the Synology NAS drive already but it's not too late for me to buy a UQ with the right functionality.  I'll just use the NAS drive as a rather capable network back-up + source for movies.

Best regards, FT

Interesting trying to follow this thread.

How are doing your ripping (software&hardware)?  To which format?

Thanks

Hi Gregg,
I rip using dBpoweramp on a MS Windows PC. I rip to usually WAV, but occasionally FLAC, and store them on a 1TB mirrored Netgear NAS. ( which is getting full now).
I then use a separate Windows Home Server running Asset upnp server  for my NDX and my non Naim network players. I set Asset to realtime transcode to WAV for my Naim (for any FLACs) , and to mp3 for some of my other non Naim wireless players such as Apple Ipad and iphones. I can also use Windows Media Player 11 with Windows 7 to play from the Asset upnp player in the study for example.

Thanks for the reply. I have been visiting this part of the forum every now and then since its inception. Things change on a frequent basis. As much as I would like to dip my toes in and start to experiment I keep on going back to a friends advice in that things are still in their infancy and always changing. It makes me wonder about going through all of these hoops considering the fact that I already own a CD555.  I do not think current Naim digital file solutions have reached that level yet.

I still may start however- (now duck for cover) - I will not give Naim a try. I would follow the Linn route.

PS. I have heard the HDX-NDX- and DAC. And the Akurate and Klimax

Best

Gregg, well if you heard Naim and Linn and wish to pursue the Linn route that is your choice. I heard the Klimax and the NDX->NDAC/555PS and the latter did it for me, the former was extremely good as well, but to my tastes it sounded somewhat clinical by comparison. However these things are so personal.

Good luck.
