Creating playlists

Posted by: Simply Grim on 12 January 2012

Good Afternoon

I want the family to be able to use the ipad to play their music and we need to create playlists. Music in on a NAS drive, streamer is NDX5S. It's dead easy with Linn, can anyone help me here?

Thanks

They did notice.  Long before anyone else thought to.

Their first product in this consumer line was the HDX.  A server meant to work with all future players.  Now you can get a cheaper, smaller version in the Serve.

Yes they are more expensive than almost any other solution, but guaranteed to be gapless, easy and perfect.

Either pony up or install J River.

Spot on.  Setting up playlists via Ipad using nServe on an HDX is simplicity itself, as is queuing next tracks etc. It's a joy to use and very quick. Don't need or use nStream so can't compare.

If they realised all of this before anyone else, allegedly, why has this not been carried over to all the other "serve" products? Perhaps a lack of joined up thinking or perhaps that someone else writes the software and the requirements stage of design was not fully realised. Who knows , we can speculate all we want, suffice to say if the serve products continued along the line of the HDX in terms of functionality and integration this discussion would not be happening. Clearly someone at Naim should be putting this on the list of requirements for a future update and save their customers a lot of hassle messing about with other bits of software never mind J River.

Well OK. But....

If one buys a streamer there is an in built assumption that ripping, storage, serving and all that is already understood and is/will be set up. One cannot buy a streamer and expect it to have the functionality of a server. Two different things.

My comments earlier about the "Serve" products was based on my audition of the available products a year ago and there was no playlist functionality available at the control point at that time even though it was controlling a server. I purchased a DAC and headed off to something that served my purposes better. Naim may have updated the control point software since to give this function.

Yep understand the difference between a server and a streamer and as someone said earlier the ideal partners are usually from the same manufacturer. However making assumptions is a dangerous and potentially expensive thing. Dealers may need to ask more questions regarding existing setup and potential uses/lifestyle. Once you start down this streaming road every member of the family tends to want in on the action as I have found out.... Kids, grand kids, partners etc all suddenly want to join in and use the music library.

Ah yes. IIRC playlists were a recent addition to N-Serve. Can't remember if they came in on the HDX at the same time or are longer lived. Never used to use them but more recently I've been leaning on this feature heavily.

I believe ALL of their servers behave the same.  I dont know what you are talking about.  The other "Serve" products have playlists etc....

Nice.  It is the dealers responsibility to make sure you understand the technology.  Sorry but.... it is up to you to ask questions.  If they cant answer them then go to another dealer or Google like everyone else.

What server as you using now?  And you would need/want a DAC anyway with Naim servers so you are in the perfect position.  Or are you asking them for free server software.  If so, just get J River.  Much better than anything anyone can come up with for free.
