Soundtrack v dialogue on the n-vi
Posted by: antz on 14 January 2012
I have recently integrated my hi-fi and surround sound setup. N-vi and Ovator 400 on the front, B&W centre, M1 surround and PV 1 sub. Connected to 200/202.
The surround sound is brilliant, but at times I notice that it overpowers the dialogue. Seems to be inconsistent but I have noticed predominantly on Apple TV movies.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Any ideas?
Thanks
Tony

Sorted then

PS - have you got the latest firmware on the n-Vi. Sorted out my signal locking issues (amongst others
I assume you use a sound level meter to set up your AV system? At least that way you know that any channel balance oddities are down to the source material.
I agree that some films have the background music cranked high enough to make deciphering the dialogue occasionally difficult - that's when I "rewind" a bit and put the subtitles on for a short while.
My reading of the n-vi manual (looked at it online) is that it should connect up to a preamp with a Unity Gain input much the same way as my AV2 and 282. You use a reversed DIN lead (ask your dealer) between the AV2 and the appropriate Unity Gain input on your 202. If you do that then I can't see any reason why the speaker test/setup routine should not work for your front L/R speakers. Sound level meters from Radioshack etc are quite cheap, and a very useful investment, if only for peace of mind.
See my Stereo/AV integration FAQ for general setup/connection guidelines
That would seem a good use of the BMR.

Naim seem to have dropped interest in AV for good so i wouldn't hold your breath waiting on centre channel BMR design. However, should they do a bookshelf size S200, maybe Ovator owners can buy a pair between them to put to centre channel use?
They'd have to argue over who gets the official Right or Left speaker but it wouldn't matter in actual use!
Good shout from Dungassin re the Radioshack sound level meter. I had tried to level mine using a free iPhone App but the readings compared to the Radioshack meter were quite off. Though discontinued i managed to find an eBay seller with at least 10 left but this was a few weeks ago.
I'd love to post a link as it was delivered the morning after ordering - fantastic service but links aren't allowed.
There again, this place doesn't get much attention so if the OP is interested and is quicker than the mods, he might get away with it and i'm trying to help another forum get the best out of his Naim kit after all
Cheers,
Rack.
Moderated Post: Rack. The rules aren't there just for fun. Link deleted. I don't appreciate being "tested" by a flagrant breach of a rule you're very aware of.
The Radio Shack Sound Level Meter is available on Amazon.
OOh a link to a completely non Naim product.
Hi Tony. I take it you've adjusted the centre gain to match the front left and right channels ?. One thing I have found is the importance of matching the front 3 speakers as any tonal differences between centre and front stereo show up. I wonder if Naim will bring out a BMR voiced centre to match the new range ?

Hi James,
Do you mean put the speaker volume at the same level for the front three speakers? Or do you mean the distance unit?
Many thanks.

But Naim don't make Sound Level Meters.

Tried Amazon. Placed an order but had a reply from their market place seller saying the product was no longer available. Took an age to find 'that' eBay link but it was/is a good one.

You need to set both but logic tells me distance is set first, then the level.

Could be a nice little side line for them if they did.
Did a little research on-line last night. Nearest equivalent to the cheapish (alas discontinued) Radioshack Meter is probably one of those from Maplin : C weighting, not too bad frequency response.
