Russ Ballard not only wrote God Gave Rock and Roll To You, Where Are We Going Wrong, Since You've Been Gone and I Surrender (the last two big hots for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow), but a whole host of other great rock and roll songs
His album Winning made back in 70s was a great record and all his solo collection is worth a spin as, of course, are the Argent albums on which he is guitarist, vocalist and songwriter (Rod Argent/Chris White wrote half the tunes and Russ the other half). He wasn't a Zombie though.
Just thought I'd mention it ....
Anybody else hereon like this dude?

From my youth...Argent "In Deep" is a great album.
GF, it seems most of your music, HMHB excepted, seems to be of "a certain age". Is there anything recent that lights your fire?

Ah Colin, that must be the golden age you are referring to.
I can’t say Russ Ballard rings any bells at the moment Guy, unlike many, many others you have reminded us of in the past and now reside on our NAS; so thanks for that.
I will look this chap up and have a listen, may prove to be another gem. As for HMHB,……..what’s that all about then? Can’t quite get them.

I like quite a few current or relatively recent artists including, but not limited to Amy MacDonald, Angie Palmer, Anna Kalvi, Arcade Fire. Basia Bulat, Bellowhead, Blur, Cara Dillon, Cathedral, Chantal Kreviazuk, The Coral, Cradle of Filth, Dead Can Dance, Decemberists, Devine Comedy, Emily Baker, Emily Smith, Florence + The Machine, Franz Ferdinand, Garbage, Jackie Oates, Jamie Black, Karine Polwart, Kaiser Chiefs, Kate Rusby, Katie Doherty, Lisa Hannigen, Loreena McKennitt, Lucinda Williams, Martha & the Muffins, Natalie Merchant, Noel Gallagher High Flying Birds, Oddfellow Casino, Ozric Tentacles, Patty Matheson. Mary Chapin Carpenter, Midlake, Napalm Death, Nightwish, Noah and the Whale, Philip Jeates, Placebo, Polly Jean Harvey, Polly Pulsama, Shara Jezabel Deva, Sheryl Crowe, Show of Hands, Sinhead O'Connor, Smoke Faries, Tarja, They Might Be Giants, Timbuk 3, Tori Amos, Wilco, The Unthanks, Waking The Witch, Uiscedwr, Yello and The Zutons
However, I not exactly up to date with what is in the hit parade at the moment and I can't stand rap or hip hop, but I am getting on a bit. I like a song with a good story line. which is probably why I think Nigel Blackwell. Sandy Denny, Ray Davies and Paul McCartney are the greatest songwriters of my lifetime.
Sometimes I think I'm too old to rock and roll and too young to die or perhaps I'm just living in the past.
Here is the great Russ Ballard
All the best, Guy

Some good stuff there GF. If you like MCC you should try her pal, Shawn Colvin.
I bought Sandy based on you raving on it. Have to say it left me cold. Maybe coming to it 40 years late left it sounded very dated indeed. Sorry mate.
My nominations for great songwriters.... Joni, Jonatha, Josh Rouse, Shawn, Prince, Neil Finn. All good stuff
