Strange incident with The Ghetto, Donny Hathaway?(heads up)

Posted by: Andrew Porter on 17 January 2012

Yesterday, whilst listening to Radio 2 (on macbook via dac and 102) the signal was interrupted and started playing The Ghetto, when it finished Radio 2 came back on. I was not using my laptop at the time and am absolutely mystified where it came from. It has also now appeared in my iTunes library!

I have never downloaded any music in my life and only rip cps into iTunes. It is in wav file and I only ever use flac.

Anyway I haven't heard this track for years and it sounded really good so I thought I would check out Amazon to see how much the album was(,Donny Hathaway Live). It was about £4 or £5, and scrolling down a bit I found Donny Hathaway Original Album Series 5 cd Box Set for £8.49 with free super saver delivery, I think this is all of his albums.

Anyway,if you haven't heard The Ghetto give it a listen and if anyone could shed any insight as to where this track came from and how it might have downloaded itself onto my laptop I would really like to hear from you?

Congrats on the Donny Hathaway find.  One of my favourite singers.  If you really like all his albums treat yourself to this

Oh and check out his albums with Roberta Flack.  I was just listening to Amy Winehouse and at the end of the Lioness Album she talks about Donny Hathaway after singing a song for you.  She mentions Carleen Anderson and now i have added her album to my never ending Amazon Basket.

I was listening to a Robin Trower interview on the radio over the summer.  Seems he's a Donny Hathaway fan, and they played "giving up".  I have it on my "must buy" list.  Hmmm, there's a thought, must buy...

Richard,  "Giving Up" is on the "Original Album Series" 5 cd collection mentioned by Andrew (above) - available for a bargain £8.49 from "Amazon".

That Carleen Anderson track is really something. I'd never heard of her before, but what a voice! Thanks for posting it Keano.

It blew me away also.  I thought i had never heard of her but she has worked with the brand new heavies, incognito, Paul Weller.  Searched on my itunes library and a few popped up.

IMHO Donny Hathaway is one of the greatest soul singers of any era and if any singer could be dubbed the male Aretha Franklin, it is he. His warm, expressive voice is capable of moving me more than almost any other. I often wonder whether the cries of anguish one hears in his voice were signs of the mental illness that was to prematurely cut short his career and tragically end his life. The box set is a must. I defy anyone not to be moved by his version of "He ain't heavy, he's my brother"
