Controlling of Uniti

Posted by: Woj on 20 January 2012

I am considering Uniti for some time but I am bit confused regarding how it can be controlled. I understand that there is an iphone application ‘nstream’ which should give me the best option to control the Uniti without need to use the remote controller. Unfortunately I do not have iphone or any other apple products. But I have an Android phone. I read on this forum that I can use several upnp ‘control points’ to control Uniti. And here is my question to these who use such option. Will such android control point give me a full access to Uniti? Will I be able to change the volume for example, change the inputs or it is just for controlling the streaming side of it?

I have Synology NAS and it has got Audio Station build in which I find quite good (I use it to stream music to my phone). Is that Audio Station compatible with Uniti? I had some time ago Unitiqute at home for tests but it did not work with Synology Audio Station. The audio station did not see Unitiqute as a ‘media renderer’. This was some time ago and the Unitiqute had one of the early firmware (but it worked with nstream).  Has anything changed? I would be grateful for any advice. I really fancy Naim equipment but would like not to sacrifice on the control side. I am using Transporter now which is soooo easy to control using basically any type of operating system.

See if you can change it for an iPhone or get an iPad.

Working in IT Security I'm naturally cautious, but I wouldn't use an Android for all the tea in Yorkshire.

Vortexbox + UQ controlled by iPad works really well.

Sorry I know nothing of Audio Station, but I think when buying a system with disparate components you need to check out what will all work together or use a dealer who can do this for you. The compatibility between digital audio is no different from what it was in an analogue system, if you bought a cartridge then you had have a matching phono stage and an arm that had the correct effective mass.

However, people do use Synology with the UQ so hopefully somebody will chime in.

If you contact Naim then they will tell you if your NAS is compatible and advise you on control software if it is.

Woj, I think you may have got confused with the NAS software, or I have one or the other!

The NAS is a UPNP Server, it dishes out the music on its drives over the air waves for renderers to see. I don't see any reason why it needs to know a renderer is there, it should have just shown up on the uniti as a source of music.

Any ipod touch will run the nstream software, the original ipod touches go for like 60 quid, get one of them, job done. Android phones barly function as a phone, so I wouldn't want to be running upnp software off them, get an old touch and use it just for that task.

No control point, other than n-stream and own-remote, will be able to control volume or input selection of your Uniti.

Thanks for responses. This forum makes me even more tempted for Uniti. Garyi - I know what you mean but Synology Audio Station has got its own web interface and it can see media renderers. That means the user is able to push music into the renderer. I have WD TV media player and I can play music through it using Synology own interface (although I do not listen music through WDTV). It is useful because I do not have to use a remote controller. The Syno audio station acts like Squeezebox server you can choose music to play on the device from the web interface on the pc.

Anyway, I think that the idea of getting used ipod is a good one and can sort all my needs, so thanks for that.

As stated the uniti interface can only be handled by the uniti software available only for IOS. This is perhaps annoying but a solution costs 60 quid. The volumes etc is not going to be controlleable from your nas so forget that end of it.

To my mind if you are going to spend 2 grand or what ever on a hifi component then a few things need to support that, an ipod touch, and a decent home network with wired ethernet to the hifi. If you cannot provide these then perhaps wait until you can otherwise you will be disappointed.

That is not completly right.

After I have updated my Uniti to V3.9 I can control the volume with the Android UpnPlay app.

Input selection is not possible.
