Three recommendations from me;

Joy Division Heart and Soul The 2 studio albums with all the singles plus rare stuff such the Ideal for Living EP and some live material.
The equivalent New Order set, Retro, is nowhere near as good, unfortunately.

John Martyn Ain't No Saint A real smorgasbord with material from all his Island LPs plus unreleased material and live recordings. Superbly packaged; the inner book is done in the style of a pulp paperback. Lovingly compiled by John Hillarby it is a thing of real beauty and a steal at just over 20 quid for 4 CDs

Pink Floyd Is There Anybody Out There; The Wall Live at Earls Court 1980-81.

For some reason I can't quite put my finger on, this set works better than the studio album.

Excellent John Martyn collection there Richard.

The most valuable box set as far as I'm concern is the Rubble collection. With the other truly great box sets like Sandy Denny and to a lesser extent Shirley Collins' Within Sound, I was able to find most of the tracks elsewhere even though I bought the sets. However, with Rubble you can't do that.   Bam-Caruso collected some ace tracks from the psychedelic era and create 20 LPs. This built on the original collection called Chocolate Soup for Diabetics and offered better sound.

The Marmalade Skies web site lists all the tracks, but you get the debut single from the Soft Machine, classics from The Craig, Jason Crest, the Attack and best of all the greatest 45 ever to hit the record shops Save My Soul by the Wimple Winch - a 45 rpm that was even better than Louie Louie by the Kingsmen (you'll need the Nuggets box set for that. which is another magnificent collection).

The other great box sets are the Beatles (Mono) and the Beatles (Stereo), but, of course, if you love music then you have these. So I thought I'd highlight Rubble, which many won't have, but definitely should investigate if you like all that was bright in 1960s popular culture and music.

My two favourite boxes are The Smith's Complete, and Angela Hewitt's Bach solo piano music. Very different, but both wonderful.

This one because it has all the fab B sides that were on my old Standing On A Beach cassette that's now in bits strewn all over a road somewhere in Scotland.

It could have been this one, but it's been so shockingly remastered it's like listening to nails scratching down a blackboard in places.  Thankfully I have lots of original vinyl.

And an honourable mention to this one.  Great value, great sound, great music.  Progress, what progress?  Here's hoping the forthcoming Mercury box set is as good, or dare I wish it, even better...

This, which is magnificent:

This superb 6-LP Fela Kuti box set (mostly from his 70s peak) gets a lot of play chez Kevin. Interestingly, although it's a six-record set, there are only 12 tracks in all!

Of all the CD box sets I own, these are my two favourites:

The Fabs one is made in Japan and not only sounds superb, it's also beautifully packaged - the attention to detail (including the inner bags!) is astounding!

Then there's this wonderful Joy Division box set:

I don't have that many box sets but this set of 18 10" singles stands out for me. There are some interesting alternative takes included. I also have the cd version of this set where the disc's are made to look like the original singles.

Pink Floyd - Pulse. 4 decent lumps of vinyl and a nice book. (Not the correct picture for the LP box but close enough)
