Unitiqute power output

Posted by: horse on 22 January 2012

hi all,

i'm currently saving up for a Qute as it ticks all the boxes for me, but it's a little over budget.   i was originally going to go for a marantz cr603 but i really want some naim kit.  one question mark for me is the fact that it's 'only' 30 watts output.    i was thinking about buying an active sub, perhaps a linn sizmik along with bookshelf speakers, do you guys think this would be a good way to go?  i hear that naim are usually conservative with there power ratings, is this true?  how would the cute compair to say the maratnz cr 603?

30 Naim watts is enough. Find a dealer and listen.

I had a cyrus III (50w) before my unitiqute. The qute sounds every bit as loud as my old cyrus. I think the 30W is quite conservative.

Best thing is to try it.

I have a Qute and it puts out plenty of power for basically any bookshelf shelf speaker.  I have used it to dirve Harbeth SL5, Thiel CS1.6, AVI Neutron IV, and Reynaud speakers with great results.  I also have a Linn Sizmik sub and it is a very musical sub.

I bought the Qute to get into digital / streaming music. Previously I used a Nait 3 of very similar power. I think most of us here buy Naim gear because we like the way it sounds- I don't think the Marantz would be a real 'equal' regardless of rated power.

I thought the UQ was rated at 28 watts, but no matter; 28 or 30, it does the job for me. I'm running into Neat Mystique 2 speakers, which I think are fairly easy to drive. Unless you need serious volume, and /or have demanding speakers, the UQ is a good place to start. It does have Pre-outs so you could add a power amp, as others have done.

The UQ is the cheapest way to get a Naim power amp, preamp, DAC, tuner, headphone amp, etc. yes, the 30 watts is quite conservative. So long as you choose speakers with 8 ohm and sensitivity of at least 86-87 dB, and listen to music at realistic levels, the UQ is simply awesome. I have one in my room driving small speakers and a Sub and the sound is every bit a Naim. Make sure you use NACA5 speaker cables. The UQ does get quite hot but that is normal.

As others have said, Naim equipment tends to sound a lot more powerful than the paper specs would suggest. Due to budget restrictions at present I'm using a Denon micro-system which is rated at 30 watts rms and this sounds more than loud enough into a little pair of bookshelf speakers. Unless you are attempting to drive very insensitive or "difficult" loads, have a very large room or like to listen regularly at very high levels I wouldn't worry.
