Uniti bricked by firmware update

Posted by: dzambolaja on 22 January 2012

Here we are - the worst nightmare happened last night:

I attempted to run the latest firmware update on my Uniti (right model, right SW number, digital iPod via USB enabled model etc.) and it failed.  Miserably.

First the firmware upload via RS232 was interrupted like 20 times at 10%, 30%, 55%, 78% etc. before it finally reached 100% completion.  Every time the "communication failure" error was reported.

Then, after finally completeing the 100% upload, the Streamer Updater got stuck at the "Device Reset" step, and it sat there forever until in reported something like the "communication problem with the device".  So I had to repeat the process again, and again and again,...  And every time it did manage to upload 100% without interruption it got stuck at the "reset" step with no intention of actually doing it.  The Uniti screen displays " Firmware Update, do not switch of..." all the time.

And now the real trouble starts:  in the process, my Uniti lost the connection to the modem/router ( I do not know why it needs it during the firmware update in the first place, unless it is for the network card detection?).  So now the firmware update process starts with the message saying something like "IP address cannot be found".  It does start the firmware upload though, however it obviously tries to start up the network card after the 100% upload is completed but fails (I guess?).

After battling for 3 hours I gave up and switched the Uniti off and back on.  And the same screen comes on saying that the device is in the Firmware Upgrade mode - in other words it is stuck in it.

I wonder if Uniti can be reset somehow by using the front panel button combination while powering on/off?

I am currently located in Saudi Arabia and my nearest Naim dealer is in Dubai 1200km away.

My machine is just over a year old and I have had problems with certain iRadio stations causing system freeze from day 1 hence I attempted this firmware update aiming to solve this issue.

Anyone knows how to RESET Uniti or to force the reboot after completing the 100% firmware upload while the network card or ethernet connection to the router is not available at the same time?

Uniti was connected to the router using the fixed IP address prior to update, if it matters.

I am desperately waiting for the Naim service center to re-open this morning to see if they can help.

Thanks

Bobby

Yes, Meridian have a similar specific recommendation policy.

No, this is useless, i have tried two cables now, one purchased on line £15 posted (a cable recommended by others who have used it for this process), and another i drove 30miles to get from Maplins £12 plus a gallon of fuel, and neither one will now even detect my Uniti.

What a useless and stupid process to do a firmware update, I have never know anything so antiquated in the world we now live in!!

Naim, you can and should do better!!!

It looks like i'm going to have to do a 100mile round trip (3 gallon of fuel) to my nearest dealer. This firmware will have cost me at least £40, fantastic.

I'm not a happy man.

did you select the right COM port, ie the one that was selected when the driver was installed?  I could choose between 3 and 6 and it was the port 6 that worked.

antivirus completely (all features) off?

My sympathies - this is one area where Naim's approach is shambolic - this is the 21st century it should not be this difficult to update firmware.

Time to call in some professional embedded software writers?

I used a cable recently bought from maplin for updating my Qute. It worked a treat. Perhaps there is some other issue?

When I initially tried it it didnt recognize my Qute either, but when I re-read the instructions it said to make sure the muic player (and I think also the computer) were connected to a network by ethernet. I connected as suggested and rebooted everything and then it all worked as it should.

I had same experience. Used the cable suggested by Naim but ran update from laptop with wifi rather than ethernet cable. First part worked but streamer update repeatedly failed until I physically connected laptop to router. Then it worked fine first time. I should have rtfm.

Both Uniti and laptop connected to network via ethernet.

Did you turn off User Account Control in Windows? Sometimes that can be a problem. Thanks!

Or just use the same procedure as with the nDAC fw upgrade - this was the fastest and simplest fw-upgrade I've ever seen...

Well, it seemes I'm not the only one who has struggled to update my Uniti, my dealer couldnt do it either, its off for a trip to Sailsbury.

A wee update to this thread.

After I failed to do the firmware update I took it to the dealer who also could not do the update, so off it went to Naim HQ where it has been now for what will be 6 weeks this coming Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dealer has chased Naim, 2 weeks ago it was, he was told on the bench being done, dealer since chased but no info coming out of Naim. This is not the service I have experienced before over the past 20 years of owning Naim equipment.

I'm not a happy chap.

Why can't this be done over ethernet alone, like every other piece of electronic equipment these days???

Perhaps Naim are now taking the lead from Focal and following the EU's Working Time Directive?

Cesq - Do you think your Uniti was running the faulty software? If you don't know about this, check the warning Naim put in the last update (3.13): If your NaimUniti is running software version BC SW 10198 DO NOT INSTALL. Thanks!

Well final update i hope...

Steven Hopkins emailed me for some info on my Uniti, after a little investigation it became apparent there was a slight admin error, the unit was sat on a shelf waiting to be returned for over a week having had its update.

As a bonus, it has had the digital ipod connection update FOC even though for my machine, one of the first one made, it was a chargable upgrade, result. Well done Naim, confidence in Naim's service regained.

It perhaps reflects the original product design.

I am just glad that Naim have now developed procdures to make it easier for customers to perform the updates themselves.

Tried and failed to update with 3.09 and 3.13 using RS232 - uniti not detected which is odd as it streams music from the laptop.

So how do you have your laptop connected to your Naim black box? Are you using a USB adapter with one of the recommended chips and have you rebooted the latop since installing the driver for the chip.

Posted on: 25 March 2012 by Rod
No USB port on older Uniti so used RS232, rebooted all, tried ethernet and wireless connections to laptop, still no discovery.

So, how is the RS232 port on your Uniti connected to your laptop?

Did you upgrade the Uniti to 3.09?

Posted on: 25 March 2012 by Rod
RS232 null modem cable, failed to detect device so no upgrade.
Posted on: 25 March 2012 by Michael Chare

So the Laptop has an RS232 serial port serial port?

You need to use a straight cable not a null modem (cross over) cable.
