n-Stream & Twonky

Posted by: Augusto Giusti on 23 January 2012

Hi there!
Twonky running on a Mac mini. N-Stream not showing full cover art on an ipad2. With Plugplayer works great. Folder.jpg in great quality in every folder.

Any advice?
Thanks

Well.....you run software called "Twonky". What else can you expect? What's next?.....a UPnP package called "Bluescreen" or "Locked Up". What about "Unreliable? Or "Buggy"? Or "Inconsistent"?

OK, just kidding. Twonky is presumably a top-notch product. I have no right to criticize it. good luck.

I was running Twonky but had decided to switch to Asset because of issues such as this! Asset UPnP works very well with n-Stream.

I had many issues with the reliability of Twonky, and it's lack of support of WAV meta data was the final straw. I now use Assett and now I have no issues with upnp, it just works and I can forget about it.

Try "Refresh Image Cache" facility in n-Stream settings.

Sorry can't help but I ran Twonky Server on an iMac and now use it on a QNAP NAS and have not had any problems with n-Stream (with an NDX).

Thanks to all. I will try Asset Augusto

Try Playback or Majestic. Works great on a Mini and serves up artwork with no issues. Tried Asset using crossover Mac. A few hours of my life i'll never get back...

Agusto, good move. You can set up transcode rules depending on streamer ID, so you can use your upnp streamer with multiple devices and network types. Ie send mp3 to your portable wireless Pure radio and full quality WAVs to your Naim, when all your content is stored as FLACs. Really how versatile this technology should be, it should enable you, not hinder.
Good luck

I have twonky running on my readynas. Funnily enough I have some album art not showing in plugplayer but work ok on N Stream.

I think Twonky needs the album art embedded into the file. I used to use mp3tag on PC to check they were ok and now use kid3 on mac.

Stephen, can I ask how do you run twonky on your readynas, rather than the default DLNA compliant software that's comes with it. I ask because I use this and n stream works ok but fails to pick up any artwork.

Hello David.

I don't think I'm allowed to post links, but before buying my Naim, I was looking at the scottish competition, and reading their forum, there were quite a few people with a readynas using Twonky. There are some excellent instructions on that forum on how to download it and install it onto a Readynas. I think it cost about £15 or so, but I prefer it to the inbuilt UPNP server. If you google Readynas and Twonky it will come up with links to where you can download it from the readynas site. You can try a free trial, and then after that buy a license from the twonky website.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Steven
I will give that a go.

Hi the inbuilt upnp/dlna server in the ReadyNas is very basic and limited, and from memory didn't serve wavs. Twonky is a step but still limited with wavs and rather longer in the tooth. Again from memory the readyNAS doesn't have enough power to support transcoding, which is a very useful feature of upnp servers especially if you store FLACs and serve wavs to your Naim.

Thanks to all Finally i'm using Asset in a Mac mini with crossover and controlled by an ipad2 with n-stream or plugplayer, the result is great. Just one question. I have heard that asset can stream flacs as wavs to the unitiqute. Is that better than streaming flacs to the qute? I have a lot of 24/192 flacs Thanks Augusto

Agusto, that is somewhat of a religious question. Only you can decide what sounds better. Asset gives you the option of streaming either by way of a simple setting irrespective of the file format of your media.
With NDX -> ndac/555PS I give the nod to WAV over FLAC (ie I transcode my FLACs to WAV) but others on this forum can hear no difference between the Naim playback of the two. Perhaps it depends on the rest of your system and your ears.....

David I am using ReadyNAS default software,  and initially had the no album art issue.  The Answer was to rename the jpg files as cover.jpg,  now it works perfectly.

Thanks David, I'll give that a try tonight and see if it works for me.

I agree that the ReadyNas probably isn't the best NAS out there. Which NAS would you recommend that can transcode Flac to Wav? I was planning on adding a second NAS and then have one simply for backups. I would probably want one with 4 drive bays.

Steve,

You would need something like Asset to transcode on the fly, which runs on Windows devices, for example RipNAS

Yes, that did the trick, renaming the files solved it
Thanks again David

Steven

David's reponse is spot on if you want to run the NAS along with the UPNP server in the same device. I have them as seperate devices and it works for me (I now have mutiple NASs, but a single uPNP server)
