Top this for a speeding ticket

Posted by: Fabio 1 on 23 January 2012

Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident, while checking for speeding motorists on the A-1 Great North Road .

One of the officers (who are not named) used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300mph. The machine then stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

The radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet over the North Sea , which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style. 'Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had automatically locked on to your 'hostile radar equipment' and sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, the Sidewinder Air-to-ground missiles aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also locked on to the target. Fortunately the Dutch pilot flying the Tornado responded to the missile status alert intelligently and was able to override the automatic protection system before the missile was launched'.

This one is for Tony!:-))

You'd be surprised how often this doesn't happen.

Lots of speed radar myths around, low flying aircraft, 45mph pigeons, cars speeding behind the target car, reflections off wet roads ............  truth is you're bang to rights unless you can prove the device was not calibrated.   Also keep in mind most UK forces have a policy of adding 10% +1mph to the speed limit before a ticket is issued.

I just got dun fer 35mph :-((  grrrr...   initially I was as mad as hell & very anti all things police, but was offered a speed awareness course in place of 3 points & a fixed £60 penalty.

Highly recommended if you get such an offer. An excellent 4 hours of enlightening facts on why speed limits, what speed does to a human & other cars, what various road marking mean, some road craft suggestions & a demo of what an advanced driving test involves. All delivered with friendly professionalism & resulting in me now being far more aware of all around me & taking much more notice of & complying with speed limits.

just a quick note , I have used some hand held radar devices in the past , not for the Police though , it always amazed me that if you sat in a vehicle , turned the fan blower on , pointed the radar gun at the air vents , the radar would shot up o 50 -60 mph , try it and see ...... No idea why they work like that.

My CFO was stopped in Finland, where they base the fine on the offenders salary...he was doing about 25km over the Limit in am hire car (ironically he drove a Ferrari at the time) and ended up with a fine in excess of £10k and was not allowed to carry on driving and missed his flight home...

I remeber this from a couple of years ago as I was travelling on the same road at teh same time. My friend who was a few miles ahead of me was passed on the St Gotthard pass by this 'nutter in an SLS'. We read this story a couple of days later when we got home.
