A 5 metre dvi to hdmi lead!

so on the odd occasions the wifi needs rebooting the mac mini can be used with the tv screen to re enter password and now I can go online on the Tv and do catch up tv with the sound coming thro the stereo

You seem a bit behind so let me bring you up to speed.

Install XBMC. Then install onto XBMC iPlayer and join us in the 21st century

thanks but the reality is when the mac mini lost the wifi etc i couldn't do anything and the vac inevitably didn't work etc

sometimes old fashioned isn't a bad thing

a direct lead means i can continue with vnc and remote etc but not have to drag a 24" screen into the living room  and reconnect it to the mac mini doc the wfi has to have been rebooted and they don't work

will look at xbmc tho thanks

"on the odd occasions the wifi needs rebooting"

Here was me wondering why you needed a HDMI connection to reboot your wife :-)

Our Mac Mini reboots and automatically reconnects with the WiFi. I then have access via the OS's inbuilt screen sharing (on my laptop) to enter my account password. We do have the Mini hooked to the TV, but don't need the screen for a routine reboot.
