How do I access my music files on Windows 7?

Posted by: Consciousmess on 30 January 2012

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help me with advice as I ripped my entire music collection to my hand drive and sold all my CDs.

Anyway, I recently upgraded my PC and kept the same hard drive, but now I cannot access my F:\music folder.  Whenever I open up that folder in Windows explorer, it has all the subfolders with all the artists and albums, but when I open their subfolders, no files are displayed!!

If I go to the properties of that folder (i.e. F:\music) I can see there is 172Gb of data there, which is reassuring, but no media program ranging from iTunes, to Media Player, XBMC pick up the files!

Can anybody help me out?!!  I would be really grateful as I suspect there is some security facility switched on preventing access, but I am the administrator so I should be able to view all the files in Windows Explorer.

Please help, as I am desperate!!

Many thanks

Jon

Sold all your CDs?  Does that make it 172GB of illegal files?

Have you looked at the properties of the folder?  Does it need to be recognised as a 'share' in a some way?

Have you tried doing a restore from your backup?

I'd say CD copy protection is working very well on your new machine...

Sorry if you can't get the files back Jon, but perhaps it's the revenge of the music industry?

To anyone ripping CDs in order to archive them (thus keeping the right to a copy), I'd strongly advise investing a few quid (£50 or less) to buy an external hard drive to copy all the files to as a back up.

I've opted for RAID1 for the main store, with safety backup to a USB Hard Drive.

I'd say get a Mac; it wouldn't help one iota, but that is what I always say.

If the files aren't there then you have lost them.

Aren't there lots of file recovery programs for Windoze, seem to recall one from Norton.

iTunes won't find music on disks it hasn't indexed: sorry no idea how iTunes runs on a PC, but on a Mac you I do know how to get iTunes to read anything that is in a format it understands.

Sorry, you should not have sold your CDs, but you know that.

Still the free world is dealing with Sony or are they?

I tell you, I must don my hat to you moralistic bunch!!!  That is said with utmost respect and I usually smile when I read posts shared by you.

You are right, it is wrong to copy your CDs and then sell them - against the law and all - but putting it into the perspective of £800+ of CDs and getting £80-100 for them makes the selling of them a tragedy!!

I did follow your tips, Gavin and Bananahead, and due to that, have managed to access the files albeit in a different way.  So many thanks for that!

Many thanks!

Well, seems a poor decision to sell your CDs. But you know that. Now please just delete your illegal files and buy your CDs back.

And for the love god....please, please, put on a fu^&1ng shirt!

Jon,

Morals put aside?

When are you ever going to learn?

You have been on here for years and were given bloody good advice from many many forum members regarding your kit upgrades a few years back.

You lost your women and room because you didn't listen and had to sell all your kit.

Please don't go down that road again man.

Stu.

I know, Stu, sh*t happens!!

But I must add that all of 'that' which you refer to has made me a different man, but I have always had a great passion for audio hifi, Naim being the brand I've been with for years.  It's so ingrained in me, it is like a culture and we all know that to change a culture is nigh on impossible.............

(For pernickety ones out there, I am aware of memetic evolution and how many generations can give rise to the culture changing, but lets not digress!! )

I am in the process of upgrading my nDAC soon and foresee a good streamer afterwards perhaps just the Qute, and that is why my issue of my tracks getting lost has been troublesome........

However, I have been moralisitic and deleted all the files - as suggested by Winky - so I'm as pure as they come!

Regards,

Jon
