Separate section for different types of music?

Posted by: Chris G on 01 February 2012

Not sure if this has been considered or even mentioned before.  Would it be a good idea to have separate sections for different types of music - e.g. jazz, pop, classical, etc?  I realise many people like to look through the whole thread whereas people who only have interest in a small or specialist area of music have to go through a lot of entries to find something of interest.  What do people think?

Seems fine to me as it is. I don't think we should endorse "isolationism"

I personally only have a major interest in Prog/Rock/Folk/Country but enjoy reading and learning something about less enjoyable (to me) genres.

Personally I like to see threads about all different kinds of music - often it will inspire me to buy something new and different and I've made plenty of discoveries this way.

I'm happy as is.

If there was a jazz music room I'd probably never visit it and miss out on lots of interesting views.

Though how about a "pink floyd" room for those forum members who only listen to multiple reissues by  ...... sorry only joking.

While I can perhaps see some merit in a separate 'classical' section, especially as it's an area of music where more in-depth and more cerebral discussions come naturally, personally, I wouldn't want one. Even though there's not much classical music I know well, I still enjoy reading classical music posts thrown in amongst the rest, and even bought a couple of well-received Christmas presents as a result.

For me, many genre categorisations are somewhat specious (post-classical, witch house, anyone?) and I usually prefer to avoid them. For instance, right now, I'm listening to Portico Quartet's new album, recommended by Lontano after we'd swapped a couple of posts about something else altogether in 'What are you listening to?'. Nominally 'jazz', I suppose, if I was being lazy, I could say it sounds like something off the last couple of Radiohead albums, with some Burial and FlyLo thrown in. But it doesn't.

Whatever it is, I like it, and that'll do for me.

Variety is the spice of life. I'm always open to suggestions of good music from whatever genre and I think this is one of the forums strengths. I have been introduced to a lot of music through the forum that I would probably never considered.

On another (Irish hifi ) forum I asked the exact opposite. On it they have classical, jazz, electronica, world etc as separate "what are you listening to threads"

I think this forums approach is best.

I've noticed when starting a thread, it's possible to insert a tag. Is it be possible to search tags, if so it could be used to search genres.
