QNAP question

Posted by: Dungassin on 03 February 2012

Well, I finally got the two 2TB drives for my new QNAP 219 PII.  Managed to make a pig's ear of the configuration at the first attempt (enter wrong password and checked the "remember box), so had to do a factory reset.  Eventually got it up and running, but had difficulty making my Windows Vista laptop accept it existed.

What I was trying to do was set up a desktop shortcut to the drive, similar to the one I have for my Buffalo NAS.  Now the Buffalo setup includes the utility to map the "default share" to a drive letter, and I have a desktop shortcut to that which gives me all the shared folders (music, photos, etc).  It's just like having a shortcut to the whole NAS in practice.  However, the QNAP setup (tools, on the initial page after running QNAP finder) only seems to let you do the same for individual shared folders.

I am intending to keep my rips/downloads in more than one folder (assuming the NDX will read them all without too much faff).  These will be Music_FLAC (uncompressed FLAC), Music_HiDef and possibly Audiobooks.  Any way of mapping the whole QNAP NAS to a single drive letter?

Still reading the manual to figure out if the QNAP actually verifies copies to/from USB external drive ...

It's things like this that were putting me off getting into streaming.

I'll leave Phil of Cymbiosis to actually sort out the Twonky driver on the QNAP.

Simply create a network folder within the windows explorer and direct it to the top level QNAP directory. This is what I have done.

Don't know how you managed it.  Windows explorer doesn't seem to see my QNAP NAS, and I have only so far managed to create shared folders for Windoze using the QNAP finder.

I'm using Windows Vista.  Perhaps you're using something else?  If I open Computer, I don't see the QNAP NAS - only those shared folders I have already created as above.  In practice it probably doesn't matter that much, because I really only intend to use 2 shared music folders for the time being.

On Win 7, open computer, go to network, there listed is the QNAP NAS. Clicking this brings up all the folders in the NAS and right clicking these allows you map a network drive.

Of course maybe vista is different..............

NAS is the work of the devil.

Under Vista it is exactly the same as under Windows 7.

If the NAS is not available under " Network" you should consider to start completely all over again with the set up, i.e. return the device to factory settings and follow the instructions during installation.

I think we are misunderstanding each other.  The techniques you describe do work in Vista, but AFAICS just allow you to map individual share folders as drives.  What I wanted to do was to have a desktop shortcut which opens a window showing ALL the QNAP's shared folders.

Phil at Cymbiosis is going to sort me out, so no worries.

I think they are designed to keep Network engineers and IT people in a job.

Ah, now I got you. Bot, sorry, no, this will not be possible. You cannot even select this level in the QNAP internal web browser. You will have to find another solution. Maybe by storing all your stuff in just one of the root QNAP folders and leaving the others idle.

Dont blame the nas its the shitness of windows. On a mac all the shares of my nas show in the finder under a folder for samba and for afp.

Ah, but they DO show in "Computer", under Network.  This is a part of Windows Explorer.  My question was purely about setting up a desktop shortcut to the top level directory of my QNAP NAS.

Incidentally, just to "fan the flames", I always preferred the desktop interface of Acorn Risc PCs to that of either Apple or Windoze (both of which I dislike equally).  The only reason I changed from Acorn had to do with availability of software to do what I wanted to do.

There is not really a 'top' level, the top level is each share
