Decision = QNAP TS212. Now what?

Posted by: plocker on 07 February 2012

Having solicited advice on here with respect to which NAS option to use as storage for my iTunes library to work with my NDX, I am edging towards the QNAP TS212.  Being a complete novice to all this, it seems this decision is only half the battle.  I want to have 2Tb storage in Raid 1 mode(?) i.e 2x1TB.  Can anyone recommend:-

1) a good place / internet site to order from where you can get good advice

2) advise which hard drives I should opt for.  I notice seagate barracuda are often mentioned

3) I need Twonky software apparently to allow itunes to talk with the NDX.  Is this something that is easy to install?

4) Is there anything else I should know before taking the plunge.  Is home installation easy?

5) Twonky have recently released a new version of software - can anyone provide feedback on its performance - especially in light of those who had complaints about its compatibility with n-serve?

In addition I was going to download dbpoweramps music ripper - can anyone recemmend it?

Thanks. As ever your feedback is much appreciated!

Paul.

If you want to take the hassle out of this and are in / near London, I can recommend Grahams Hi-Fi in north London.  They sell the TS212 and will set it all up for you with drives and Twonky installed.  It's probably cheaper doing it yourself, but Grahams provide a valuable service and are there if you need help.  They also recommend DBPoweramp by the way.

I can only speak of the qnap ts110 (single drive) and they are a delight to work with. Just bought a second one.

1. Advice on QNAP forum . search for

QNAP NAS Community Forum

2. Drives, well I have 2tb ones, no issues with Samsung EchoGreen F4 and Seagate 2TB BARRACUDA 3.5" SATA-III Hard Drive - 7200RPM 64MB, the latter v nice so far and less than £100.

3. A version of Twonky is pre-installed, it just needs turning on and pointing to the folder where the music is.

This is done via web logon to the drive = easy.  This worked fine when I borrowed a Qute from the dealer.

4. Installation very simple if you follow the sheet of paper  My method...

. Slot the drive of your choice in the slot

. boot the unit and connect it to your network

.  find the IP it has been assigned  on your network , with QFinder or an Iphone network scanner like iNet.

. htttp login to the unit at the IP it is on and logon to the drive.

. The Qnap is clever enough to let you install latest software etc before it formats and prepares the drive.

5. pass, don't use twonky now as I have moved to squeezebox and its server which installed very easy onto the QNAP via the QPKG (additional third party software packages) install.

Hope that helps

Having had diabolical experiences with some NAS drives I really don't think you can go wrong with QNAP.
