Quality Music Downloads

Posted by: Mr Frog on 07 February 2012

I've already ripped my entire CD collection (FLAC) using dBpoweramp and have also downloaded some 24/192 material.- which are all stored on my NAS

I'm not interested in the 'lossy' MP3 material available for download from iTunes and Spotify etc.

I wondered where I can purchase CD quality downloads (16bit/44.1khz) rather than having to buy the CD and immediately rip it

Qobuz.com is a favourite of mine nowadays,  but you can find a lot a quality webshops with downloads in this list here: http://www.dreamstreaming.info/

Qobuz looks excellent, even though my French is a little rusty!

I've just searched on an album, that I'd like to buy (Laura Fygi - Change), clicked on the download button (TÉLÉCHARGER) and received the message "This article is not available in your country yet (UNITED KINGDOM)" so it looks like us Brits are not invited to the party.

It's a shame as like Mr Frog a source of CD quality downloads is an attractive idea.

I registered an account with qobuz using a french address, but pay with paypal and that works great.
See if you can find a friend or colleague whose address you can use to register.

They seem to be doing IP address checking, I didn't get as far as registering and got the cold shoulder treatment.

Strange thing because I'm not in France and managed to register an account with them.

Maybe I was in time before they added additional barriers?

Brits welcome:

www.highresaudio.com

It's a company based in Berlin. They have just entered into a cooperation with Universal Music.

They also have some of the stuff from the Linn ship on offer.

Wow Pinkhamster, what I find!!! And loads of 192/24 including many of my favourite classical pieces. They also have Face of Mount Molehill.

Not available to us in the U.S.  We get HDTracks . . . I guess this copyright licensing stuff is all regionalized these days.

Still lacking all the UMG "Rock" titles that HDTracks has at the moment. Do you know if the new cooperation will change this?

I'm afraid, I have no further insight. I had known the store from the one or other previous purchases and only just lately read a press release about the Universal cooperation in a German audio magazine.

Concord Records is one of my favourite labels. I'd like to buy their music in hi-res, but it appears that only regular CDs are available via Amazon. Does anyone know where I can download hi-res Concord music?

Thanks to everyone for the useful replies

In relation to more 'popular' and chart music, any ideas as to where these can be purchased for download (but not MP3)?

e.g. Dire Straits, Adele, Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zeplin etc - as opposed to the more unusual Jazz and Classical genres which seem to be the 'norm' on most high res sites

I would be happy with 16 bit (CD quality) material, if a high res version wasn't available - just seems silly to buy the CD simply for the pupose of ripping to get it stored on the NAS.

I did manage to download some REM (Out of Time) and Fleetwood Mac (Rumours) from HD Tracks (24/192 and 24/96 respectfully) which is great - but there seems to be a distinct lack of material available for my family's musical tastes (the wife likes Adele and Take That!!)

Hopefully someone will be able to point me to a relavent site to be able to puchase this sort of music - but I'm beginning to think that I'm going to be stuck with buying CD's - which seems a little 'old fashioned' way of sourcing material in this new digital era!

Perhaps if CD's are ever relegated to the archives along with 8-Track, Audio Cassettes and Mini Discs, we will be forced to accept the lower quality of MP3 - unless the music industry accepts that there is a market for the higher quality stuff. Afterall, it is recorded at 24 bit (I think?) before being compressed (e.g. 16 bit for CD and worse for MP3), so why not make the 'original source' available - just like the Naim recording of "Meet Me In London" etc; (which I have purchased!)

Am I looking in th wrong place or is this sort of rock/pop material and new chart releases, just available on iTunes (Spotify etc) in the low quality MP3 standard (rather than at least CD quality)?

Qobuz do have mainstream pop/rock as 16/44.1 downloads. Provided you find a way to buy from where you live, that is.

Unfortunately not available in the UK

Tried to register but needs a valid French postal address as part of the registration process

audio companies should be lobbying these sites in support of uk customers about the increase in sales of streamers etc.

Mr Frog - surely you, of all people, have a French postal address?

Posted on: 08 February 2012 by PinkHamster

musicload.de is massively putting rock and pop as WAV 44.1/16 on the market. Though I am not sure they can be accessed from outside of Germany. Could somebody give it a try?

Only accepts postal addresses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - so I can't register from the UK

.... so much for the European Union

Posted on: 08 February 2012 by PinkHamster

Sorry, I had thought that this might have been the start on a new era ....

Well, it is - for me at least

wolf gang vaults downloaded aretha franklin concert in flac. worth trying

Of course, restricting in the EU is unlawful. A good legal test case waiting if someone has the energy and funds to take on.

strange............. lots of the best music was from uk and we cant access it

Posted on: 12 February 2012 by Simon-in-Suffolk

Strange...... You should be able to purchase it.. I can certainly buy music from different parts of Europe here into the UK. The only limitation I am aware of is that you have to pay the VAT of the source country, even though it might be higher than your own.
