Best Ripping NAS

Posted by: CDI on 17 February 2012

I am going to go streaming properly soon (using SB Touch as toy at the moment)

I noticed in the dealer that sells Naim & Linn they were using Ripcaster products. I would like the simplicity to rip and store in one box. Has anyone any veiws on "Zoneripper Max", 4TB (is this enough)

I have the DB poweramp software on my laptop but do not want to have to use the laptop to rip discs

Any advice welcolme - I think the Naim ripping box does more than I need?

I've got a ZoneRipper myself, 2x1TB plenty for me, worked fine. I think they have discontinued the RipNAS devices, a dealer mentioned there were some reliability issues so they recommend the ZR now.

It's a lot more money than just a simple NAS such as VortexBox or AssetNAS, but I guess you pay for the convenience and having a box that can go on a rack that looks like it's part of your system. However it's a lot less than equivalent Naim products, and arguably more flexible.

You can build your own intel based server and run Vortexbox - as wild or powerful as you want - its the software that's important. Tog

In the context of ripping and storing in the same zone then vortex box really is the best solution.

I got it running just fine on an old P4 delivered from ebay for 24 quid and thats got to be considered good value, though of course at this level it needs to be kept out of the listening space.

Does the standalone Vortexbox software check the accuracy of the ripped file like dBpoweramp does?

Did Ripcaster tell you this? It may be important to clarify that Ripcaster have discontinued supplying the RipNAS devices, preferring to market their own ZoneRipper devices. RipNAS are still made. Reliability is, by accounts I have heard, no worse than any other computer product.

You can use your ripper of choice - i often use XLD on my MBP and drop the files into the Vortexbox - Bliss then sorts out my preferred file structure and album art.

I bought a RipNAS and extra storage box in January 09.It's been nothing but trouble.I ripped 3000 CDs onto it and lost the lot.I was lead to believe Raid 2 mirrored HDDs would keep a back up.No such luck.I had to post it back to Austria three times. It was not working more often than it worked.

Got it running again on Wednesday night.HDD failure again two days later.

Luckily,I'd only ripped one disc.

What is the members' experience of Zoneripper? This seems to be very similar but does have the all-important added feature of reliability?

Raid is not a backup, even the mirrored raid, because the backup is on the same system - a power surge, etc and both HDDs are fried. A backup has to be a separate entity.

gave ripnas away to family and it still works perfect. i have a zone ripper for the last 4 months ,it is quiet .built well and had no problems. phone john at ripcaster if you want a chat.   i have mine on the bottom shelf and it is barely heard except for ripping

you are correct that Raid is not a back up, but if configured correctly it is an excellent form of protection.

I have a 12Tb NAS drive using 6 drives of 2Tb each. I have all music on system using raid 5+hot swap.

I was unlucky enough to have one of the drives fail, but the company replaced it immediately, and on insertion, the system fully rebuilt the new drive from the rest of the drives (plus i had the hot swap option).

That being asid, i have also a full copy of all music on a separate set of portable 1tb drives, stored in a cupboard (just in case)

Contacted Ripcaster today and ordered a Zoneripper Classic. This gave me 3TB capacity that I needed for my 3000 CDs in FLAC.

At least it's a UK product so I won't need to ship it to Austria if it plays up.

I've learnt my lesson about RAID not being a back up and will connect it to a 3TB back up HDD.

Now I just need to rip all 3000 CDs again.Too many to be able to afford Ripcasters bulk CD ripping service.

Play back through Transporter/Naim DAC in main listening room and Squeezebox Classic or Touch in other rooms.Doesn't sound as good as Esoteric X-03 SE CD player though.

hi bob  good back up service from john at ripcaster .   AL

That's reassuring Rich, given the proplems I encountered with the RipNAS.It was John Nelson I spoke to when ordering the Zoneripper. He's offered to help with the set up by logging into my PC remotetly.

I've very little IT knowledge and need streaming technology to work as smoothly as hi fi.
